When launching their design firm in 1990, Menchions and Rushbrook didn't want it to bear
their surnames. Instead, they opted for a moniker that evokes the piece of lumber that serves as the
foundation for so many construction projects. Building on that premise, II BY IV DESIGN has carved
out a niche in a variety of sectors, including hospitality, where its clients include Fairmont Hotels &
Resorts, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Hilton, Marriott Intl. and Thompson Hotels. Over the years,
the Toronto-based studio has expanded its operations to include a separate product studio, Republic of
II BY IV DESIGN, in its home town as well as offices in New York and, more recently, London, and grown
its staff to 50. II BY IV DESIGN has also won numerous accolades, including Boutique Design's Designer
of the Year for 2012 and a 2017 Gold Key Award finalist nod for the penthouse suite aboard the Crystal

Schultz'S Work iSn't juSt eaSy on the eyes. Evoking an emotional response and
engaging all five senses drive her process. "Our designs always incorporate unexpected
moments that add a smile to a guest's face," says the 12-year industry veteran. To find out how
she channeled that philosophy into a grassroots design approach to create a neighborhoodfriendly rustic boutique for outdoor enthusiasts in St. Paul, Virginia, flip to "Community
Outreach" on page 40. Prior to joining IIG two years ago, the 2011 Boutique 18 honoree's
experience included roles as a designer at RTKL (now CallisonRTKL) and an interior design
principal at EoA Inc. | Malcolm Berg. Most recently, Schultz took the helm of her Indiana-based
employer's newly launched South Florida studio in Cooper City in April.

lim iSn't juSt an art lover-he's an artist. The Chinese-born, Hong Kong-based creative's large-scale
works, including a piece that Guinness World Records ranks as the world's largest lantern sculpture,
have been on display at the Venice Biennale, as well as in China, the U.S. and Holland. Those skills give
him the ideal foundation to create statement elements that make 3D magic in hospitality spaces. For

24. Since Lim founded CL3 in 1992, the architect's firm has worked on notable hospitality projects for
clients including AccorHotels and Swire Hotels, as well as the Shinjuku Prince Hotel in Tokyo, which
was a finalist in the 2016 Gold Key Award for Excellence in Hospitality Design competition. Lim has
also served on advisory committees for organizations such as Art Basel and his alma mater, Cornell.
