NEW YORK STATE OF MIND
WELCOME TO NEW YORK-Boutique Design style.

In anticipation of the 9th annual Boutique Design New
York (BDNY) trade fair and conference Nov. 11 and 12,
we pulled out all the stops to give our readers a behindthe-scenes tour of some of the most anticipated and
innovative hotels opening in the Big Apple this year and
next. Some are taking design to new heights (literally).
Others are finding fresh, and sometimes provocative,
ways to incorporate distinct art and cultural cues from
their local burrough into authentic, aspirational public
spaces and guestrooms.
For instance, "Block Buster," on page 42, provides
a hard-hat look at how architect Danny Forster and
Marriott Intl. are elevating modular to a whole new
level with the AC by Marriott NoMad, which is slated to
debut in late 2019. The high-rise development is setting
new standards in design, proving that modular doesn't
have to mean mediocre.
citizenM's new location on the Bowery, designed by
concrete, in "Art House" on page 48, creates a big box
modular design concept with tight, carefully curated
guestrooms stacked on top of a permanent art exhibit-
the Museum of Street Art (MoSA)-in the hotel's plaza
and stairwell. Besides being a really cool gateway for
hotel guests, MoSA is a spirited gesture to the community as a place for local artists to proudly display their
work. concrete's designers packed the cool factor
into the compact guestrooms with high-tech amenities, while creating a visual feast in the lobby with an
eclectic collection of found objects and fine art.
In "Focus Pocus" on page 36, The Hoxton made quite
an impression in Williamsburg-or maybe it's the other
way around. Instead of making a grand entrance, like
AC and citizenM, this British flag chose a new-build
solution that marries this community's current vibe
with nods to its industrial past. Case in point: the interior facade of its eatery, Klein's, was designed to recall
the site's previous life as a factory.
Two of New York's biggest design influencers-
David Bowd, cofounder of Salt Hotels, and Sam Gelin,
founder of MADE Hotels-talk shop about the ups and
downs of being mavericks in an industry often driven
by group thinking, how they made "local" more than

a design cliché and what's on their companies' boards
in "David and Sam's Excellent Ventures" on page 68.
Although they have vastly different backgrounds, their
singular visions for their hotels have a great deal of
fundamental similarities, including a shared appreciation of a "guest first" mentality over business as usual. In
their view, if guests-and staff-are happy, the money
will follow.
This issue also looks at some of the megatrends
shaping global design. Alicia Sheber, our UK correspondent, caught up with a trio of hospitality legends-
Mama Shelter president Serge Trigano, Generator ceo
Alastair Thomann and designer Karim Rashid-to find
out how they are redefining the select service and midtier segments in "People's Choice" on page 84. They
believe everyone deserves good design, no matter the
price point, so they've switched up the thinking in the
middle and devised their own ways to deliver luxurylike lodging for everyone, whether traveling for business, leisure or both.
For a sneak peak of what's to come at BDNY, turn to
"Total Immersion" on page 94. More than 8,000 hospitality interior designers, architects, purchasing agents
and owners/developers will be gathering for two highintensity days of inspiration, innovation and industry
intel at our trade fair and conference held at the Javits
Center. This can't-miss event will showcase more than
750 manufacturers and marketers of the latest design
elements for hospitality interiors, as well as over 35
panels featuring thought leaders from all sectors of the
hospitality design community. The event culminates
with the Gold Key Awards for Excellence in Hospitality
