And, other sections descend quickly. Contact
the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (www.tahoerimtrail.org) for further information. They
can make recommendations which sections
would be best for your group, where to access
those trails, supplies needed, etc.
The Rubicon Trail is one of the only
trails that follows the shoreline. This 6.5 mile
long trail connects D.L. Bliss State Park with
Emerald Bay State Park. Moderately rated, the
trail combines rocky boulders and cliffs with
sections close to the water. Bring your swimming suit. There are some coves in which to
cool off. Of course, with over 70 miles of shoreline, there are also several public beaches for
swimming and picnics, but walks along the
water's edge are allowed. Most of the beaches
are located along the southwestern shores and
the northeastern shores. Kings Beach, located
on the northshore, also offer some great activities including parasailing, kayaking, jet skiing
and paddle boarding.
The aforementioned trails are just a very
short list of what is available. The Lake Tahoe
area offers an abundant number of hiking
trails for those just discovering the passion,
those who are just looking for an inspiring
walk through beautiful surroundings, or those
who are truly dedicated to the sport and thrive
on day long or multi-day challenges. ss

South Lake Tahoe area include a 9.6 mile
(round trip) hike to the top of Mount Tallac.
At 9,738 feet, Mount Tallac is the tallest mountain on the lake's shoreline and part of the
Desolation Wilderness area. Although one of
the more strenuous hikes due to the elevation
climb, (the trailhead elevation is 6,480 feet*) it
is also one of the most scenic. In addition to
the exquisite views of Lake Tahoe, it wanders
past smaller lakes, through forests, and climbs
rocky sections. The trail head is located on
Highway 89 between Camp Richardson and
Emerald Bay along the Mount Tallac Road.
In the same area is the trail to Eagle Lake.
The beginning part of the trail is quite steep
and rocky, but the trail itself is only about a
mile long - two miles round trip. Along the
way, there are gorgeous views of Emerald Bay.
One of the most noted trails in the area
is the Tahoe Rim Trail. Covering over 160
miles as it encircles the lake. It will have to
be broken into much smaller segments - especially for hikers. There are several trailheads
to access it around the lake. This trail is also
popular for mountain bikers, however on several sections of the trail, mountain biking is
prohibited. Be prepared. Some trails are strenuous as they climb to higher elevations. Some
parts of the trails follow dirt or sandy paths.
