Public Affairs Panel Sessions - 2019

Two Public Affairs panel sessions were conducted on Saturday
at the 2019 Far West Ski Association Convention. We had an impressive group of panelists who provided valuable information to attendees.
The morning session presented topics that included Skiing History, The Ways of Washington, DC, and The Impact of Ski Fashion
on Snowsports. The moderator was John Watson, FWSA History

Chair and Snowsport Builder Award recipient in 2018. Speakers included: Nancy Ingalsbee, former Washington DC representative for
the United States Ski Association (now United States Ski and Snowboard) and a Snowsports Builder Award recipient in 2017; Barbara
Alley Simon, who brought ski fashion to the forefront of snowsports,
and a Snowsports Builder Award recipient in 2019; and Ingrid
Wicken, ski history author, founder of the California Ski Library, and

Sessions At the 2019 Convention:
An Important Resource for Clubs & Councils

When someone asks you are you covered? What do you think? This was the first
of three Snowsports Leadership Academy sessions at the 2019 FWSA Convention in Indian
Wells, CA. Fred Liebel, an insurance broker
with C3 Risk and Insurance Services and Jim
Hovren, JD and MBA presented the facts and
issues of clubs having General Liability coverage. Many issues were talked about and questions went on until the very end. The final
message; all ski clubs need some type of coverage to protect from litigation in these times
and risks.
Are you on board for adventure? The
second session just before lunch, covered
Strategic Travel Planning for Success. Four
travel experts along with Far West Ski Association V.P. of International Travel, Debbie Ste-

wart, delivered some very important information for those club leaders planning travel.
Stephen Hall, owner of Skigroup.net, PierreYves Mazeaud, European Marketing Manager,
Sean McErlean, V.P. of Holiday Tours and Joan
Thornton, V.P. of Mayflower Cruises and Tours
laid out the perfect planning strategy for your
next club trip. The sessions gave many of the
leaders good ideas that they had not thought
about. It was a success and opened minds of
what to look out for.
What is "The If's, And's and But's" all
about? Well, it was a session for club leaders
to learn how to overcome objections when recruiting new members to their clubs. The presenters were: Todd Hood, Vice President of
the National Brotherhood of Skiers - Western Region and professional seminar leader; Afarah

Board, also with the NBSWR and strategic
initiatives professional; and Michael Bouton, FWSA VP of Membership; and club and
council leader. They led the session through
many curves and angles of how one can recruit younger and energetic persons to come
into their club and create new excitement.
The sessions gave them the tools to take back
to their clubs to attract new members and
leaders. It was a very active and involved session that took the attendees out of their comfort zones. The main message was "put your
fear aside and just ask".
