The election of directors was left to the
four originating ski clubs -Truckee Ski Club, Auburn Ski Club, Yosemite Winter Club and Viking
Ski Club of Los Angeles - to name two each from
their respective clubs. A resolution was passed
asking that there be an entrance fee of $20 for
each club desiring to affiliate with CSA. California was admitted into the National Ski Association 60 days later at the annual convention held on December 14, 1930.
Officers elected were Frank Deuprey of
the California State Chamber of Commerce,
Secretary; W. A. Wadsworth of Los Angeles,
Treasurer; Vice Presidents: Don Tresidder, Yosemite; Herbert Fleishhacker, Jr., San Francisco, for the northern part of the state; George
L. Eastman and J. B. Hanson of the Viking
Club, both of Los Angeles, for the southern part
of the state. In 1931, Wilbur Maynard, representing CSA, went east and was successful
in securing the NSA Championships in Jumping and Langlauf [cross-country] for 1932. CSA
organized its first Annual Championships on
February 21-23, 1931 at the Olympic Hill of the
Lake Tahoe Ski Club. This event was sanctioned
by NSA and used as the 1932 US Team California Olympic Tryouts.
The California Ski Association was incorporated in December of 1938. The Association
was divided into six districts (one of which included the State of Nevada) with counties assigned. District councils may hold meetings to
further the purposes and activities of the Association. By 1940, the California Ski Associa-

gram was the launch point for a full menu
of domestic and overseas travels offered to
benefit members of FWSA. Those member
benefit programs are still in operation
today. By 1973, FWSA paid membership
was over 33,000 and despite some declines
it once again climbed to 48,000 by 1978.
FWSA has had several rough spots in
its history after 1950, mainly based on the
different objectives of sanctioned competition and a mass recreation-based constituency, with both drawing from the common treasury. This resulted in the spinoff
by Far West Competition in 1976. The
second was a dispute over sponsor dollars
with the Recreational Racing Program in
1984. With a dispute over funds and to
avoid perceived interference from the larger
recreational skiing body, what had been the
FWSA Recreational Racing (intramurals)
program left the new USRSA to form the
Far West Racing Association (FWRA).
Withdrawal from the USSA in 1983
was the biggest upheaval of all. On the national level, compliance with the Amateur
Athletics Act of 1978, required that the
USSA had to reorganize around National
Governing Bodies for each of the snowsports.
There is no NGB for recreational skiing
and the recreation programs within USSA
then had to draw upon resources of a competition organization, were basically restrained from sponsorship opportunities
and confined to a committee in the USSA
organization. At that point, all the carefully
developed recreation-related programs
showcased in a decade of USSA National
Ski Weeks and two decades of operation as FWSA had to find or build a new
home.
For FWSA, the immediate solution
was to continue under a new organization
and that was the US Recreational Ski Association (USRSA). This turned out to be a
temporary solution. The former FWSA
was revived in 1985 on the initiative of
Janie Hansen, and the determination of
Jane Wyckoff to make it work economically. To this day, there are two Articles of
Incorporation for FWSA, but we operate
under the 1985 simplified version authored by Hansen. The reanimated FWSA
did not require dues from each member in
each club and welcomed participation with
the ski industry. This "new" business model
has proven successful for over 35 years. ss

tion had 32 clubs. In 1940, the Association promoted and aided in the training of soldiers in ski
techniques and conducted cross country competitions simulating military maneuvers. Dues for
all clubs were suspended for the duration of
World War II. By March, 1947, the number of
clubs had increased to 41. In 1948, the NSAA
changed its name to USSA, and renamed the
California Ski Association and assigned Arizona
and Hawaii to the new Far West Ski Association.
Councils came to replace the districts by
the mid-1960s. There were only four councils
until 1971. Meanwhile, skiing was undergoing
an accelerating growth starting with the return
of veterans who developed new ski areas and
the expanding options for modern personal
equipment and apparel. In 1970, FWSA embarked on a campaign to create new councils in
Arizona and the Tahoe-Reno and Sacramento
areas. Progress was made and individuals volunteered, but without permanency. However, the
idea remained and permanency was achieved in
the next 15 years. A side product of the council
development initiative was the 1971 spinoff of
Inland and Orange councils from the 63-club
Southern Council which was centered in Los
Angeles. Arizona Ski Council joined FWSA in
1992, NWSSC (Portland) in 1992, Sierra Nevada
in 1996 and the National Brotherhood of Skiers -
Western Region, as the 10th FWSA council in 2018.
In 1960, FWSA had 80 clubs and a paid
membership of 4,500. The Charter Flight Program commenced in 1958 and grew dramatically through the 1960s. Travelers were members (Sources include National Geographic; National Ski
