People often ask me why I like recreational racing. There are many reasons. Where else
on the mountain can you ski on a run that is closed to everybody else except you when it is
your turn to ski down the course? I am the only one going down that run when I am racing,
and I can go as fast as I want to go. Nobody is going to pull me over and tell me to slow
down, and I don't need to worry about being hit by someone else skiing or boarding down
the hill. Another reason is that I enjoy the camaraderie with all the other racers. It is a great
way to meet new friends and ski partners.
It should also be noted that many times the mountain has spent more time and effort
grooming the area where we will be racing, and the conditions are quite often better than
many other areas of the mountain. We also have the option most of the time to purchase discounted
tickets because of the size of our group.
In recreational races, we try to get people lined up and down the course as fast as possible,
so they have plenty of time to ski or board the rest of the day. On average, all the racers
on the course will be done in less than 30 minutes, and we try to limit the number of racers
on each course to 35 to 75 racers. By doing this, our races are safer, the snow conditions on
the course are better, and people are not standing around a long time. People have time to
converse with each other while they wait for their run and time to watch and cheer other
skiers or boarders proceed down the course. It is always fun to watch the different styles of
skiing or boarding when people are racing.
We invite you to come out and watch our races or join in the fun at one of our league
