Candace Cable & Schone Malliet
with 2021 FWSA
Snowsports Builder Award

Candace Cable is a pioneer in the sport
of wheelchair racing. She is a nine-time Paralympian
who competed in three sports: track
and field, alpine skiing and Nordic skiing (12
Paralympic medals including eight Gold
medals). She also had the opportunity to compete
on an Olympic stage, when wheelchair
racing was an exhibition event in 1984, 1988
and 1992. She won two Bronze medals. Candace's
athletic career includes 84 first place
finishes at various marathons around the
world. She has demonstrated a continued
commitment to the future of sport, including
her US Olympic Paralympic Hall of Fame induction,
serving as the vice chair for LA 2028
and consulting with various groups across the
world to create a more inclusive environment
for those with disabilities.
Schone Malliet was very active in Four
Seasons West Ski Club and served as executive
vice president of the National Brotherhood
of Skiers (NBS). In 2014, Schone
helped raise $12 million to buy a small ski resort
in northern New Jersey called Hidden
Valley, updated all the infrastructure, and converted
it into a non-profit facility for teaching
skiing and snowboarding to kids from the
greater metropolitan region.
He renamed the ski hill the National
Winter Activity Center (or just The Center)
and partners with existing youth organizations
to introduce kids to skiing and riding.
The Center introduces children to activities
that they would not typically be exposed to or
consider trying, while making it economically
feasible. It is the only facility of its kind in the
country. The program includes wholesome
meals, six weeks of lessons typically held on
weekends, and fitted gear. The Center served
180 children in its first year of operation. In
2018, more than 1,400 kids came through the
program. The projection is to serve 10,000
children by 2022. ss

FWSA Safety Recognition Award Renamed to the
" Richard Lubin Safety Person of the Year "

Dr. Richard Lubin, " The Snowboarding Chiropractor " and FWSA Safety Chair passed from earth
to eternity on March 28, 2020 after a short hospital stay.
Richard's condition was the result of a bacterial infection that turned into a spinal abscess
shortly after the December 2008 Board of Directors Meeting at Sunriver, OR. Richard was hospitalized
at that time; however, the antibiotics could not control the spread of the bacteria and Richard
underwent spinal surgery that was not successful, leaving him a quadriplegic. About two months
after this, he was in his PT session and impressed the Physical Therapist with his spirit, determination
and effort. Richard was back and showed the inner strength and determination to get better. At
this point he could barely move his hands. Though effort and hard work he got motion and strength
back in his hands and arms.
Positive energy lit his spirit - he was kind, generous, an amazing chiropractor, passionate music
lover, football enthusiast, ardent snowboarder, playful sense of humor, and a great friend. He truly
touched everyone he met!

Richard was the 2001 and 2002 recipient of the FWSA Safety Person of the Year and was appointed
Safety Chair in 2004 by then FWSA President, Mike Sanford. Richard served as FWSA
Safety Chair from 2004 to 2020 and has been the only FWSA Safety Chair. He has written many
safety articles that have been published in FWSA's The Councilman and the Far West Skier's Guide,
developed safety videos, and envisioned and executed the FWSA Safety Thermometer Program with
our ski area partners. On May 30, 2020 the FWSA Board of Directors unanimously passed a resolution
renaming the FWSA Safety Recognition the " Richard Lubin Safety Person of the Year " . ss
