The Councils' Man and Woman
of the Year Recognition Program

Far West Ski Association is comprised of ten councils and
over one hundred ski clubs, all of which consist of thousands of
volunteers. Not just the presidents, secretaries and treasurers, but
the people who run fabulous ski trips, and the guys and gals who
stand behind the bar at club meetings; the folks who show up early
to set up chairs (and stay late to take them down); the ones who
share wax on race day and help pick up litter on the highway the
next. The ones who've brought our clubs into the 21st Century
technologically (fingers crossed!), and the ones who remember the
histories through the years. The ones who run the fundraisers (and
the ones who buy the stuff)! Heroes and heroines, sung and unsung,
that make our clubs and councils - and FWSA - the great
organizations they are.
The Councils' Man and Woman of the Year Recognition
program has changed over the years (and will be changing yet again
next year), but it still does one thing: provides recognition of the
incredible, hard-working volunteers that keep our clubs viable, active
and successful. There have been few times in our history where
our clubs and councils have faced a challenge like a pandemic, but
these men and women met that challenge, and are being recognized
by their councils for making that extra effort to make sure what
could happen did happen, and kept it all going! While the selection
criteria for each council may be different, the men and women who
we're introducing to you have one thing in common - they're all
exceptional!
Big White Ski Resort continues to be our generous sponsor
of our program by providing a 5-day trip to our Man and Woman
of the Year winners. Our winners will be announced Saturday night
at the FWSA Convention Awards Banquet. We are honored to
introduce you to this year's council representatives. Please join
Far West Ski Association in celebrating their nominations.
Arizona Ski Council
Bill Behnke
As an active member of Phoenix Ski Club, Bill has held many
offices, including President, Vice President and Ski Trip Coordinator.
He worked with other members to develop an Environmental
Stewardship program, and has hosted many social events for the
club, including monthly dinners, happy hours, and pre/post trip
parties.
Bay Area Snowsports Council
Marci Lyzun and Don Shaver
Marci is a member of Inskiers Ski Club, where she has served
as President from 2019 to present. She's been the auctioneer for the
club benefit, and has hosted their holiday potlucks for five years.
She worked as " Race Ambassador " to encourage race participation
and organized post-race get-togethers for Singles League clubs.
Don belongs to, and is President of, Modesto Ski Club. Don's
efforts have focused not only on running the club, but managing and
fundraising for the lodge owned by the club in Truckee, California.
Don has been BAC's trip leader in past years, and supported
several FWSA trips.

Central Council
Fran Long
Fran is a long-time, active member of SLO Skiers in San Luis
Obispo, California. She has served in many positions on the SLO
Skiers Board. Fran has been the President of the Central Council for
many years; and has also served on the FWSA Board. She believes
strongly in giving back to the organizations that give her such
pleasure.
Intermountain Ski Council
Lynda Clark and Craig Orsen Olsen
Lynda loves being part of the Bogus Basin Ski Club and is
often heard promoting the club to others on chair lifts, in town, and
at work. She has been skiing off and on since 1983. Today, you can
find her enjoying the lifelong sport on blue and black runs.
Craig, also a member of Bogus Basin, is the Communications
Director and technical wizard for the club, spending many hours
on website content and a significant website changeover. Craig
participates in many of the club's fundraising efforts and has worked
on committees for many club events.
Los Angeles Council of Ski Clubs
Soo Jeung Lee and Pete Smith
Soo is a member of the Unreccables, where she is a PSIAcertified
adaptive instructor. Soo assists the club's Ski School
Director in dryland and early season snow training for volunteers.
She also assists the club's Equipment Manager. She spent many
COVID-restricted hours with on-line meetings, education and chats
discussing adaptive snowsports and safe trip logistics.
Pete is a member of Wailers, and has held several offices
including President, Vice President, Membership and Trip Director
positions. He's a member of the National Ski Patrol, and has
organized fundraisers for outside organizations like Wounded
Warriors and Habitat for Humanity. Pete is the 2019 recipient
of the Far West Safety Person of the Year Award.
National Brotherhood of Skiers - Western Region
Shauna Kinsey and Frank W. Robertson Jr.
Shauna is a member of SnowBusters Ski Club of Pasadena,
where she served as the Vice President, Director-at-Large, and Trip
Leader. She is currently the Marketing Outreach Chair for NBSWR
and a two-time FWSA Outreach Grant Winner.
Frank is a member and current Vice President of the Winter
Fox Ski Association. He worked to reinvigorate joint Southern
California NBS Ski Club happy hours, and has been trip leader for
several NBS Urban Winter Fest and NBS Summit and Mini-Summit
events, and continues to captain the annual Lake Mead Houseboat
trip.
