Northwest Ski Club Council
Sandi Shaub and Bill King
Sandi was nominated by the Interlachen Ski & Ski Club
but has spent her primary energies with Skiyente Ski Club,
including Vice President and Editor. Sandi has chaired several club
fundraisers and annual events.
Bill is a member of Mountain High Snowsport Club and is the
current Vice President. He is an active PACRAT League racer, and
has been Trip Leader on several club trips. He also participates in
club hiking and white water rafting events in the summer. Bill is
also treasurer of Northwest Ski Club Council.
San Diego Council of Ski Clubs
Eileen Weiner and John Walsh
Eileen, a member of Don Diego Ski Club, is currently the
Council Representative for the club, and active on the committee
working to rebuild the club. She is also the San Diego Alpine
League president, coordinating its merger with ROKKA and
ULLR Leagues.
John is a long-time member of North Island Snowdrifters,
and is currently Race Director for that club. He is also a member of
the Inskiers Ski Club and has been an active member of the Singles
Race League, serving as League Chairman for many years. John is
a recipient of the FWSA Terry Smith Award.
Big White Ski Resort has sponsored the Far West Councils' Man &
Woman of the Year Program since 2001. Each council can nominate
a man and woman to represent them at the annual Far West Ski
Association Convention. The Far West Councils' Man and Woman
of the Year are chosen by their peers based on their contributions
to organized skiing.
History of Man and Woman of the Year Contest
In the beginning, this contest was mostly a beauty pageant for
the ladies where the contestants modeled ski apparel. There were rounds
of cocktail parties, publicity photographs followed by a hectic day of
interviews, tours and parties. The winner was crowned Queen.
In 1976, Far West opened the competition to the men. In those
early days, the " Snow Queen & King " were chosen by noteworthy and
impartial judges.
In 1981, the contest was not held because Far West thought the
contest was too sexist. The contest reappeared the following year as
" Councils' Man and Woman of the Year " in the format utilized today.
The Man and Woman of the Year each win a five-day trip to Big
White Ski Resort. As seen in the photos to the right, the resort is known
for its abundance of snow during the winter months. Winners will be
chosen from the list of honorees listed on these two pages.
