San Diego Council
of Ski Clubs
by Ira Lindenfeld,
President
I'm proud of the clubs we
have in the San Diego Council of
Ski Clubs. We have clubs that
have many destinations for skiing
and snowboarding, both domestically
and internationally.
Some
clubs consistently have strong
race teams each winter.
Other
clubs specialize in their athletic
choices here in San Diego.
Another club has many retired
folks that no longer ski but want
to maintain their friendships of
several decades by joining in on
social activities. One very distinctive
club owns their own chalet in
Mammoth and offers it to
members only using a reservation
system. We truly have clubs for
every age group and interest level
in our beautiful city.
Our goal as a council is to
keep our local skiers engaged and
aware of industry changes and
news. We share anything that affects
their snow adventures with
safety, equipment, and resort information
with individual club
representatives at our monthly
meetings.
Our council offered some
amazing domestic trips this past
year. We all know the huge impact
the COVID-19 Pandemic
placed on our industry and favorite
sport. We all persevered and
continued our sport, with our individual
comfort levels, and still
enjoyed the winter.
San Diego Ski Club has its
own chalet in Mammoth for the
club members. This is a very dynamic,
family-oriented club offering
many activities including
holiday parties, Warren Miller ski
movie events, an annual memberappreciation
barbecue, end-of-year
beach party and potluck in June.
The club's altruistic efforts include:
Adopt a Highway program
and contributions to food drives
for enlisted military families. The
club is open to both skiers and
snowboarders, and is very proud
of their successful race team.
Get Off Your Rockers: One
look at the club's dynamic website
will convince you that Get Off
Your Rockers (GOYR) is one
VERY busy organization.
The
membership has grown more
than 30% with over 325 members
and counting.... New activities
such as dancing and bridge have
been added, and bowling resumed
in August. There are many sports
activities including pickleball, kayaking,
sailing, boogie boarding, biking,
foot golf, birding, tennis and
golf. Cultural enthusiasts attend
outings and tours. They socialize
at summer picnics at Mission Bay
and happy hours throughout the
county. Travel opportunities include
Mexico City to Michoacan,
Southern plantations, Eastern Europe
and Germany.
Members
continue to donate their time to
the San Diego Rescue Mission,
San Diego Food Bank, and other
needy organizations! The club
even established Rockers Helping
Rockers during COVID and continues
to reach out to help one
another with special needs.

Torrey Pines Ski Club members
enjoy many various social activities,
and are excited to get back
to these activities after a year off
from COVID. Monthly meetings
are held outside at Mission Bay
with complimentary hot dogs during
the summer months. In addition
to monthly meetings, there
is a monthly Happy Hour at various
locations in San Diego and
members lead walks around
town. The game nights are fun
and members enjoy local tours.
Summer concerts in Coronado
are back and always a favorite of
the club. Other outdoor theatre
includes the Moonlight Amphitheater
in Vista. A highlight this
year is the return of the Summer
Pops series at the new Rady Shell
on the Embarcadero.
The club
will be attending a Sergio Mendes
Show and Chicago - the Musical
Janie Lindenfeld, Barbara Blase, Debbie Schroeder and Chris Gill,
Convention Chairperson and others gather to plan the FWSA 2021
Convention to be held in San Diego. photo provided by Barbara Lee Blase
Show, in October. Midweek ski
trips to Mammoth are hosted
with Don Diego Ski Club. Check
them out on Facebook and their
website. www.tpscsd.org
Don Diego Ski Club was
founded in 1959 and is still going
strong. Their signature offering is
three midweek ski trips to Mammoth
Mountain, in January, February,
and March. In the 2021-22
season, they will add a flyaway
trip. Most of the club members
are over 60 and the club offers
year-round activities, including
weekly hikes, weekly bike rides,
monthly happy hours, regular picnics,
house parties, museum tours
and more.
North Island Snowdrifters:
The club was formed over 40
years ago and membership includes
some of their original
members. Some no longer ski but
continue to support the club in
other social events such as biking
and hiking locally. In 2020, the
club had two Mammoth bus trips,
and did one flyaway to five resorts
near Salt Lake City, UT. The
goal for 2021 is to return to four
Mammoth bus trips and a trip to
Copper Mountain, CO.
Action Ski Club: Action is
an active social group of singles
and couples 21 and up who live,
work, and play in San Diego!
Their motto, " a continuous party atmosphere "
is reflected in yearround
activities designed for all
types of fun seekers. They are a
friendly, informal bunch who
enjoy skiing and snowboarding,
dining out, biking, rollerblading,
holiday sushi boat cruises, hiking,
happy hours, paddle boarding,
kayaking and camping. Many
members have been with the club
for several years, and new members
are always welcome! They
strive to minimize waste with all
our events and trips, and aim for
carbon neutrality. They also hold
several philanthropy events annually,
to help the less fortunate.
Action trips include: Ikon Ski Resort,
Utah; Big Sky, Montana;
Mammoth Super Bowl, California;
Whitefish, Montana; and
Winter Park, Colorado. Check
them out at one of their upcoming
General Meeting and Happy
Hours, or check out their state-ofthe-art
website: www.actionski.org.
Pacific Rim Alliance has
been active in San Diego in skiing,
snowboarding, sight-seeing, photography,
travel and public awareness.
The club offers many other
events including water skiing,
wake boarding and bike rides.
Trips are offered to Cabo San
Lucas and the club travels to Big
White Ski Resort in British Columbia,
Canada annually.

The year 2020 was a challenge
for San Diego Council, yet
our determined group easily
adapted to monthly Zoom Board
meetings. We kept in contact and
began planning our rescheduled
FWSA Convention to October by
utilizing the Zoom format. An
early December ski trip to
Heavenly, NV is in the works. We
also have full capacity for the
FWSA Ski Week in Aspen Snowmass
in January 2022. A group of
24 is looking forward to a Moselle
River Bike and Barge trip in June,
2022. (The Moselle River runs
through Northeast France, Luxembourg
and Western Germany.) We
all look forward to a better upcoming
ski season.
