INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL 2O22 - RECAP
From March 5 - 11, a smaller group of
22 participants enjoyed our extension trip
while staying lakeside at the Hotel Maritim in
beautiful Titisee-Neustadt, Germany.
The
Black Forest Region in Germany is like no
other. The very name Black Forest invokes
images of deep woodlands, traditional deeproofed
farmhouses, cuckoo clocks, and halftimbered
villages that look like they have been
taken out of a fairy-tale book. And, you must
not forget the infamous Black Forest cake.
The rolling hills and awesome landscapes offered
a never-ending series of photo worthy
views.
The charming village of Soldën is surrounded by over 90 miles of skiable terrain, plus skiing on
two glaciers. The area is serviced by over 30 lifts. A fabulous time was had by all on the 2022

2022 FWSA Ski Week to Soldën, Austria, with an
Extension Trip to the Black Forest in Germany
On February 25, a group of 44 FWSA
participants departed the U.S. for the FWSA
International Ski Week in Soldën, Austria. We
learned that it truly offered " The Big Three. "
There are three large ski areas to explore and
Soldën is Austria's first resort offering three
peaks beyond 10,000 feet. Soldën hosts the Alpine
Ski World Cup and one of Europe's most
renowned ski and snowboard resorts. The infinite
number of slopes and ski trails are available
for all levels, with over 91 miles of slopes,
including two glaciers! This is the largest ski
resort in the Ötztal Valley, and the Austrian
hospitality is incomparable!
Our 4-Star Tyrolerhof Hotel was centrally
located to the gondola/tram system, with
many restaurants and cafes, and plentiful
stores for shopping and nightlife activities.
One could walk across the street and stroll
along the beautiful river wandering its way
down from the snowcapped mountains.
The Soldën/Ötztal Tourism Office Director,
Mikaela, was available each evening to assist
our participants by arranging special
activities and tours for our non-skiers, as well
as answer questions regarding the entire
area...what an asset to our members! One highlight
for our James Bond Fans was to visit the
007 Elements cinematic experience inside the
summit of Gaislachkogl mountain!
While traveling during the strict COVID19
protocols, we continued to practice safety
protocols while indoors, in group settings and
traveling on the bus. The ski resort personnel
did monitor mask wearing in lift lines and
waiting for a tram or gondola. We learned
many things while complying with each country's
requirements...it often changed. As soon
as I provided our members one rule...it certainly
was revised or eliminated. I kept telling
everyone that, " The only thing that was Constant...is
Change! "
The area is known for charming villages
and unique cities full of beautiful trees. We
had daily bus tours taking us to places such
as: Lindau; Freiberg; Triberg; Colmar; Kayserberg;
Heidelberg, including the Heidelberg Castle;
and Strasbourg, including their historic
cathedral. While in Triberg, we enjoyed hiking
to the " Triberg Wasserfall " which is the largest
waterfall in Germany, as well as, visiting many
specialty shops proudly selling their signature
cuckoo clocks, and touring their unique and
interesting museum.
Another special activity included exploring
Freiburg. One of the great masterpieces of
the Gothic architecture in Germany is the
Freiburg im Breisgau Munster. This impressive
Gothic Church was built between the
13th and 16th century where the 116-meterhigh
tower sweeps the views of the rooftops
of the entire old town.
We experienced many delightful restaurants,
enchanting hamlets, and communities
while appreciating perfect weather.
What a remarkable trip with amazingly
fun people!
