sion and is scheduled to be completed in the
fall. It will be structured to enhance our new
initiative to procure grants. If you have skills
or experience in soliciting or administering
grants, we would welcome your input. We also
recently produced a brochure, which will be
available on our website at www.farwestskifoundation.org.
Maxine
Jensen, Director of Sales for Alpine Adventures, announced the donation by her company
of a trip to Croatia for a live auction at the FWSA Convention Awards Banquet, with funds raised
to be donated to the Athletic Scholarship Program. She was inspired by Keynote Speakers Phil
and Steve Mahre, Olympic Medalists, and the work being done by the Far West Ski Association
and Far West Ski Foundation to generate funds for the Athletic Scholarship Program, and wanted
to contribute to the fundraising. Earlier in the day, auctions were held for donations by Whitefish
Mountain Resort, Grouse Mountain Lodge and Kandahar Lodge, Montana, which also generated

Far West Ski Foundation
New Initiatives

President, FWSF
The Far West Ski Foundation (FWSF) is
a non-profit organization that has four snowsports
missions: Building for the Future,
Rehabilitation and Renewal, Sustaining
Snowsports, and Preserving the Legacy.
The FWSF is currently staffed by volunteers.
The Foundation may receive tax deductible
contributions in furtherance of its missions
and objectives. Such funds are then
directed to the focused missions of the Foundation.
FWSF is an autonomous, public benefit
non-profit corporation operating under the
laws of the State of California and in compliance
with law and regulations under section
501(c)(3) of the IRS code.
The FWSF Wine and See's Candy Auction
at the FWSA's Annual Convention in
June raised close to $1,000 and is earmarked
for adaptive sports. In addition, live auctions
were held for travel packages donated by
Whitefish Mountain Resort, Grouse Mountain
Lodge and Kandahar Lodge in Montana, and
Alpine Adventures, which generated over
$4,000 for the Athletic Scholarship Program.
The See's Candy Yum Raising fundraiser will
be conducted in December for the holidays.
The SNOW Sports Museum at the entrance
to Palisades at Tahoe (Squaw Valley) is
well into permitting and will be a focus of
FWSF fundraising. Our goal is to maintain the
prominent display we've enjoyed at the Western
America Ski Museum as it transitions to
the new SNOW Sports Museum facility. Coincidentally
the museum, in conjunction with
Coolfire Sports, received the Warren Miller
Modern Media Award at the convention for
their production of " Magic on the Mountain. " In
addition, the Foundation supports the California
Ski Library in Norco, California, which
will soon be undergoing a major expansion.
The profound impact of our/your fundraising
supporting junior racing through the
Athletic Scholarship Program was portrayed
in Phil Mahre's emotional presentation at the
convention. We should all take pride in this
program and strive to increase our support.
The Foundation, in collaboration with its
sister organization, the Far West Ski Association,
has supported sustaining snowsports
through Women's Ski Jumping USA
(WSJUSA) and its Fly Girls program since
2009 with special campaigns within organized
skiing. This program was recently placed
under USA Nordic Sport by U.S Ski and
Snowboard.

I am touring major ski museums in the
central Rocky Mountains. Send me the contact/location
of any local ski archive that you
know of anywhere in the FWSA region to
president@farwestskifoundation.org. I am
compiling a list of possible legacy recipients.
FWSF is recruiting individuals who are
interested in joining the Board. Candidates
must be willing to actively participate in our
fundraising efforts. This is one great way to
contribute to the legacy of the sport that has
meant so much to all of us. For more information

FWSA
History
Program

History Committee Chair, FWSA
There are a number of reasons why we
have a history program. First, to expose or
educate members to the dynamic history of
their sport. Second, to provide educational
material for public use. Third, to promote the
establishment, growth, and continuance of
preservation in learning centers and museums.
Fourth, to provide opportunities for research
into snowsport history. The foundations of
this program began in the early 2000's under
the leadership of then president, Mike Sanford.
We started with the Ski Club/Council
History Recognition patterned after the Outstanding
Ski Club competition. We laid out a
detailed template for guidance on what could
be in such a history. The competing entries
would be judged by an expert panel. Criteria
include support activity in the public community.
Such histories show the pace of the
Association's development (within the larger
universe of snowsports industry development),
inform members - and conceivably
be patched together into a broader history. It
can be used for outreach and recruiting. Con
