Educational Opportunities at Convention
Snowsports Leadership Academy Sessions

Three Snowsports Leadership Academy sessions were presented at the Annual Convention this year.
The modules provided education
on specific topics of interest to ski club officers and members. The purpose of the Academy is to provide an informational forum to the
members attending the FWSA Convention, and has evolved into a valuable resource. It is designed to provide Far West members training and
tools to enhance and expand their club programs, and be recognized industry wide as having a measure of standards and consistency.
" Strategic Travel - in a Changing World " was moderated by Debbie Stewart with presenters:
Sandy Gaudette - SkiGroup.net; Maxine Jensen - Alpine Adventures, Sean McErlean
- Holidaze Ski Tours; and Gloria Saiya-Woods - Ski.Com.
These highly knowledgeable industry partners addressed the latest up-to-date information
needed for club trip directors that are facing an ever-changing world of travel. Discussion included
some of the " most asked questions " regarding international and domestic rules and
regulations, protocols, lodging issues, transportation challenges, pandemic and COVID mandates,
insurance and much more.
" Avalanche Safety and Mountain Rescue " was presented by Steve Rollins and Paige
Baugher, Ph.D, EMR, WFR, Rescue Leaders from Portland Mountain Rescue (PMR).
Paige is also a PMR Public Information Officer, a Professional Observer and Avalanche
Awareness Instructor, Northwest Avalanche Center and an Avalanche Educator, Outdoor Pursuits,
Pacific University of Oregon. Portland Mountain Rescue is a non-profit mountain rescue
team that conducts Search and Rescue (SAR) missions for lost or out-of-bound skiers and
snowboarders, rescues fallen climbers, and provides other search and rescue services at the
request of law enforcement. This team specializes in high mountain, all-weather rescues including
avalanche, crevasse rescue, zero visibility navigation, technical rope rescue, and helicopter
operations. In addition to providing a review of rescue operations, they provided
valuable insight into how not to get into a situation that requires a rescue. They also extended
their appreciation to all FWSA members who have been or are currently volunteer members
of the National Ski Patrol, for the work they do the mountain.
" How to Jumpstart Your Facebook Social Media Presence " was presented by Marc
Galt - Founder of Ski the Northwest and Todd Hood - Treasurer, National Brotherhood of
Skiers - Western Region.
The workshop shared actionable steps so users can utilize standard free Facebook tools
to grow their social media audience immediately, and provided a lot of opportunity for questions
and audience interaction. Since convention, subscribers to the new E-mail list for Social
Media administrators have been receiving Social Media Sunday E-mails featuring one helpful
