son. During the 2023 off season, Bogus Basin
has installed a new pump on the " back side "
to add more snowmaking capacity.
Tony Harrison told us the other smaller
ski areas in Idaho are not so fortunate. They
do not have the funds to invest in snowmaking
equipment, so climate change will be a
major challenge for their future operations
and survival.
Brad Wilson also told us how the COVID
pandemic affected their visitor numbers.
People were looking for activities outside so
the visitor numbers increased dramatically at
ski resorts. The influx of more skiers brought
a set of unexpected challenges. Traffic and
parking were an issue. Crowding on the
slopes was a big problem. Bogus Basin reinvented
their lift tickets to two and then
three different time slots to try to get skiers to
use the resort at different times, early day, afternoon,
and night. And, they also created a
mid-week pass to reduce crowding on the
weekends.
We discussed the Ski Hill Resources for
Economic Development Act (SHRED) introduced
in the US Congress by Representative
Ann Kuster of New Hampshire in June 2021.
The SHRED Act (H.R. 3686) would require a
substantial portion of the money collected by
the US Forest Service from ski areas be reinvested
in improvements to forests from where
the money comes. At the FWSA Sunday business
meeting, Convention delegates voted to
support the proposed SHRED Act. Randy
Lew and Steve Coxen, on behalf of the Far
West Ski Association, sent a letter of support
to the appropriate agencies. ss
