Advice for Trainers
It’s fairly simple to launch social learning. e key is to build your own acumen, and then you can expand your team’s skill set. To get started: • Use social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, if you do not already do so. en, set up a private group for your team through LinkedIn to test out the technology. • Once you develop a level of comfort with these technologies, investigate what enterprise solutions your company o ers for social networking. Besides Yammer, other social networking tools that can operate behind company rewalls include Socialcast and Socialtext.
• Gain the support of key stakeholders, such as sales, marketing, and regulatory, at your organization. Work with these groups to develop an in-house policy for using social media. Watch for updates from the FDA on their soon-to-be released social media guidelines. • Don’t adopt social media technology just to say you did it. Be strategic. Look for a gap in your current curriculum where social learning might be a good t and launch a pilot project. For example, you might create a few social networking groups prior to a distance learning event to engage learners — before and a er.
• Stay abreast of new technologies and best practices in social learning through organizations like SPBT, the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD). • Don’t be afraid to fail. Start small and learn from your experiences. Social learning is constantly evolving. Experiment with the technology and see where it takes you. I
