respondents listed these key components for the next three years: • An increased focus on compliance with regulators. • A need to align training plans with business objectives. • Developing trainers to deliver virtual learning. • Developing and enhancing learning portals. • Changes to products and markets. Je Taylor, senior director of strategic capabilities for Sano , certainly relates to the changes in products and markets challenge. “ e biggest challenge we’re facing now is the business model for us and a lot of pharma companies is going away from the blockbuster drug to smaller niche products,” Taylor said. “I call it economies of scale or e ciencies. e resources to support many small brands is greater than to support one large brand. We’re still managing many small brands with limited resources. We’re trying to be more efcient with the same number of people.” But before life sciences trainers go there, they need to overcome current challenges to the learning landscape. e landscape survey lists the top ve issues facing trainers, spotlighting broader, systemic issues for which no simple “magic bullet” is readily available: • Reluctance to divert sales people from their jobs. Companies are turning to new performance expectations and utilizing eld training solutions and new media to address anytime/anywhere learning. • Lack of executive support. is is the ongoing soundtrack to

corporate training, but many survey participants were nonetheless optimistic about bigger budgets and creating the right culture for learning. As one participant said, “We’re transitioning to a ‘training as a business’ model to make a case for needed resources.” • Learning transfer. Study participants largely agreed that learning transfer is optimized when learners are given the chance to adopt new behaviors within three weeks of being trained, and are then given feedback on their e orts. Many respondents cited a lack of follow-through by managers, o en making training ine ective.
