COVERSTORY

• Incorporating technology. Respondents were de nitely not in agreement on the use of learning technologies, with many citing concerns about multiple generations in the workplace – some of whom may not be as comfortable with technology-enabled learning – and about customizing learning and engaging students with virtual training. But the impact of the iPad on life sciences training was de nitely reected in respondent comments, with one person saying the iPad “could be a game-changer for training.” • Limited Resources. It’s certainly not surprising to see respondents citing the need “to do more with less” as a common concern for life sciences trainers. Respondents were worried about burnout on overworked training teams, as well as the need to cut and cancel training. It’s almost like we’re one big company. e similarity of challenges across companies of all sizes was very apparent.” In the face of such systemic and all-encompassing challenges, measurement becomes an important tool for training leaders to prove both the value of training and the alignment with business goals and objectives. As Figure 2 shows, needs assessments are heavily utilized to determine the scope of training initiatives, with success being shown through methods such as behavioral surveys, certi cation testing, managerial feedback and formal, written testing. Not surprisingly, technology was a theme that ran throughout the survey, with respondents variously citing technology as both a cause of and solution for problems, as well as being the means for identifying and addressing training challenges.
