Well-Being At Work:
A Critical Consideration

T

By promoting
our own
well-being, it
will pay off for
our business

he world in which we live is an
increasingly complex environment for us
to navigate. In this fast-paced society, it
can oftentimes be hard to step back and consider
your own well-being. Finding your inner
strength, strengthening your resilience and
making time for yourself can further your
positive contribution and experience at work
and at home.
In order to be the best that we can be, it’s
important to ask ourselves what's working in our
lives, what is creating stress, and what changes
we should consider. There are multifaceted aspects of our day-to-day
lives that enable us to bring our
best energy to everything we
do, including the workplace.
It's not simply about the
work itself, but it is about
how healthy we are that can
oftentimes result in how
effective we can be.
As human beings, we
don't leave our personal life
at the door of our company
nor do we leave our company
in the driveway of our home.
They are intertwined and it makes a
difference to step back, assess, and
make changes that help us be the best we can
be, not only at work where we spend so much of
our time, but for ourselves, our friends and our
family when we go home. Elements of our lives
that should be considered are the following:
• Career: Do we like what we do in our job?
• Social: Do we have strong relationships?
• Financial: From a fiscal perspective, are we
managing our finances effectively?

• Physical: Are we in good health? Do we
have enough energy to do all the things
effectively that we want to do in our lives?
• Community: A sense of belonging to where
we live and ensuring the opportunity to give
back – are we engaged in the area where we
live? Do we feel part of our local world and
do we allow ourselves the time and energy to
give back for all we have?
All of the above areas/questions are
interdependent on each other. Well-being has
been identified by researchers as critical to
overall health. By promoting our own
well-being, it will pay off for our
business in that we will be more
engaged, healthier, and have
more energy to be effective in
the time we are present at
work and/or home.
It's easy in our industry
to work long hours, as we're
passionate about the work
we do and the mission to
bring solutions to patients
and families who are waiting.
It is important to recognize that
by focusing on balancing the
aforementioned aspects of our lives,
we can ultimately yield a more
productive lifestyle at work, as well as at
home.
In this issue of Focus, you can explore ways to
make yourself healthier in your career, your
social circles, financially, physically and
emotionally through being an active contributor
to your community. Putting yourself first is not
selfish … it’s about making sure the best you is
there for your family … and your work! I
