COVERSTORY

helps to create a total competency
rating that determines where the
learner is on the continuum and where
he or she needs to head. Unlike
traditional learning, which rolls out
knowledge and then measures
absorption, the K2 plan starts where
the learner already is.
"That's what we want to know, the
current state," Brin said. "The
prescriptive learning plan addresses the
gap."
After initial evaluations, the learning
leaders generated reports on each
learner, sending them to managers.

The Ethicon home office is
the center for new hire
training and the home of
K2 headquarters.

Now armed with
personalized data, the
managers and learning
leaders could identify
gaps and challenges,
and prescribe a learning
solution.
"A lot of learning took place after we
rolled it out," Brin said.
The process is indeed ongoing. In
one calendar year, Brin and
McEntire said, a sales
representative would
complete the diagnostic, be
prescribed a learning
solution, and then go back
and reevaluate themselves
every six months. The model
never ends, they said. People
just perpetually get better.

Manager Involvement
Managing people gets
better too. The K2 approach

shortly after hire and is
becoming part of the
entire employee lifecycle.
"At the beginning of the day
it really is a tool to help
managers," McEntire said.
"Everyone across the board
continues to grow and
develop."

Energy, Confidence and Trust
Every training leader knows that
learning is a mountain to climb.
Learners struggle upward in their
pursuit of greater knowledge and skills,
and when the summit is reached, the
opportunities are endless. With that
mountain in mind, Ethicon's use of K2
as a metaphor for personalized,
customized learning is spot on.
Just as in mountain climbing, learners
must have confidence in their abilities,
faith in their tools and trust in their
leadership. Reaching any summit is the
result of both individual and group
efforts. Training leaders act as
experienced guides, but as with any
journey, the more energy expended,
the greater the rewards.
Reaching the "rare air" is the mountain
climber's goal. Learners can get to the
levels they desire as well, building on
the tools of inquisitiveness, input,
confidence and commitment.
