Learning Management
System Trends
Key Trends and Advisory Insights
TGaS Advisors and SPBT partnered to learn
more about how training and development
organizations across the life science industry
use dedicated learning management systems
(LMS).

IS THE LMS HOSTED INTERNALLY OR EXTERNALLY?

FIGURE 1

We found that the 30 companies responding
to our query use a variety of systems,
including open source platforms, SAAS/cloudbased and proprietary, which make up the
largest percentage. Some 60 percent have
moved to external LMS-hosted solutions
(Figure 1), which are demonstrating improved
efficiency, lower cost and better support than
in the past.

Rating Vendors and Systems
Client expectations are increasing as new
devices and different delivery modalities
become available. The three most critical
factors companies cite in selecting a vendor
are strong user interface (77 percent), ability
to integrate with other systems (70 percent)
and strong training and support (43 percent).
(Figure 2) Additional factors include data
extraction, stock reports, GxP (GMP/GCP/GLP)
requirements for documenting training and
dashboard reporting. We found that the need
for increased features and functionality is

capabilities as mobile tracking, video
streaming, social media and authoring tools
that push mobile-ready solutions.
A question about levels of satisfaction yielded
mixed results, with half rating their
experiences good to excellent and half
average to poor. (Figure 3) Respondents
report that such features as a simple and
intuitive interface, flexibility to track all
training types, detailed reporting and the
ability to customize the system to meet the
needs of the business would greatly increase
satisfaction levels.

LMS Management
When it comes to managing the LMS, more
than half the participating companies employ
one full-time person to support the system,
usually under the purview of commercial
sales training. (Figure 4) Dedicated support is
critical for maximizing the value of LMS in
order to leverage the system and provide
such value-added services as capturing and
