50 PLUS HISTORICAL CAFE / CONCERTS / TRIPS & TRAVEL Historical Cafe Exploring Pennsylvania Stan Ulrich, from Lititz, Pennsylvania will talk about his early life in historic Lancaster county. He will discuss the historical, cultural, religious and geographical anomalies that influenced the settling of this unique part of America. He will explore the rich heritage of the food, arts and people. There are over 2,000 miles of winding, scenic roads filled with Amish buggies, Old Order communities, and quaint quilt and antique shops. A Pennsylvania Dutch meal of pork and sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, peas, chow chow and whoopee pies will be served. 1/23 W 11:30 AM-1:30 PM $20 Non-Member $16 Member The Black History Robert O’Rourke will tell us why Negro Spirituals are central to black history in America. From the first sale of 20 “negras” in Jamestown, Virginia, by a Dutch pirate in 1619 that marked the beginning of Afro-American history to 1865. At the end of the Civil War an estimated one million slaves had been imported to the United States. From the hot humid holds of the ships and the cotton and rice fields, a new musical form emerged. The music expressed the joys and sorrow, love and hate, hope and despair of the slave’s daily lives. 2/13 W 11:30 AM-1:30 PM $20 Non-Member $16 Member Trips Age: All Senior Center trips are for ages 50 & up unless otherwise noted.
