GEEK - Fall 2017 - 32

Hour of
the Wolf
TEEN WOLF ENDS ITS RUN
AFTER BECOMING A SOCIAL
MEDIA PHENOMENON.

WHEN TEEN WOLF DEBUTED ON
MTV in 2011, anyone expecting an
adaptation of the Michael J. Fox
theatrical comedy was likely shocked.
But the network and producer Jeff
Davis, who developed the show,
always intended it to be a dark and
stylish reboot inspired more by The
Lost Boys than the Karate Kid-style
goofiness of the movie.
Teen Wolf stars Tyler Posey as
Scott McCall, who discovers a
dangerous world of werewolves,

werewolf hunters and other supernatural
creatures after he's bitten by a wolf himself.
Scott's lycanthropy turns him into a
superstar on the high school lacrosse field
(so much so that a rival teammate becomes
convinced McCall's on steroids) but opens
up his friends, like wisecracking Stiles
Stilinski (Dylan O'Brien) and family (single
mom Melissa, played by Melissa Ponzio) to
unspeakable jeopardy.
Teen Wolf boasts the sleek, vivid look
of a graphic novel come to life thanks to
producer and frequent director Russell

Mulcahy, a former music video director
turned movie-maker (Highlander, Resident
Evil: Extinction) who's helmed some of Teen
Wolf's most pivotal episodes. "Russell really
set the look and feel of the show," Davis
says. "What he was able to do with simple
lights and a look and feel is phenomenal,
and you have no idea how little our budget
is compared to other shows."
Part of the visual impact comes from
the distinctive, Werewolf of London-like
makeup on star Tyler Posey ("We wanted to
maintain the beauty of Tyler Posey's face,"

106 &107 - "HEART MONITOR"
& "NIGHT SCHOOL"
The show's first real two-parter, "Heart
Monitor" showcases the blossoming
romance between Scott and Allison and
the continual bromance between Scott
and Stiles. Tons of classic moments are
here, but the unforgettable ones are Allison
touching Scott to calm him and a seriously
well-aimed lacrosse ball. But when season
baddie the Alpha attacks our heroes, the
result is part two's "Night School": an all-out
horror romp in a deserted high school with
just the core cast members. It's fun, tense,
action-packed - and scary.
