13. 28 Days
Later

There may
have been
better zombie
movies made
in the past 75
years, from Val Lewton's I Walked
with a Zombie to George Romero's
Night of the Living Dead, but none
were scarier than the visceral
and vicious Danny Boyle frightfest in which a zombie plague
overwhelms Britain and Cillian
Murphy's Jim wakes up to a world
gone mad.

American
Werewolf
in London
It's rare that
a film can so

deftly mix comedy and horror,
but few films do it better than
the John Landis '80s classic in
which David Naughton and Griffin
Dunne fail to heed the advice to
"stay off the moors" and learn the
hard way to "beware the moon."

11.
Hellraiser
Celebrating
its 30th
anniversary
this year, Clive
Barker's stunning directorial
debut based on a novella from
his "Books of Blood" series is this
terrifying film about the demonic
Cenobites who are released after
"Uncle Frank" (Sean Chapman)
opens the enigmatic puzzle box
and unleashes a world of pleasure
and pain.

10.
Poltergeist

A creepy and
atmospheric
ghost story
from producer
(actually director) Steven
Spielberg in which the Freeling
family is terrorized by ghosts in
their suburban home built over
an ancient Indian burial ground.
You'll never look at clown dolls
(or trees and televisions) the
same way again.

9. Psycho
One of many
Alfred Hitchcock
masterpieces,
its iconic set
pieces, such as the shower murder
of Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), are
now as familiar to audiences as

anything in the history of movies,
and Anthony Perkins' unhinged
yet sympathetic performance set
the bar for many psychopaths
and serial killers to come.

8. The Evil
Dead
Director
Sam Raimi's
1981 horror
masterpiece
with a $350,000 budget in which
a group of college students, led
by Bruce Campbell's Ash, find
themselves taking a bucolic
vacation in a remote cabin in the
woods until they decide to read a
few passages from the "Book of
the Dead." Bad idea. The sequel/
remake, Evil Dead 2, remains the
funniest horror-comedy ever
made.
