As forensic scientist Ella
Lopez, Aimee Garcia brings
a nerd's attitude.

Crime Solving Geek
by Jeff Bond

AIMEE GARCIA MADE A REAL DEAL WITH THE
DEVIL WHEN SHE SIGNED UP FOR LUCIFER,
the Fox TV series about Lucifer Morningstar
(Tom Ellis), who grows bored ruling over the
infernal regions and retires to Los Angeles to
run a nightclub while helping the LAPD solve
crimes in his spare time. Garcia plays forensic
scientist Ella Lopez, a doubting Thomas who,
fortunately for GEEK, is also a bit of a nerd.
"I speak Klingon as Ella; I speak Spanish and
French," Garcia points out. "[Ella]'s from
Detroit, she has four brothers, her grandma
told her how to pick a lock. She's super goofy,
she has no filter. She thinks Lucifer is an
unemployed method actor and thinks he just
needs a hug all the time. They become friends
and in season 3 they end up taking a road trip
somewhere and singing and dancing ensues."
Garcia has managed to do a lot of genre

work, including appearing in the international
giant dragon attack movie D-War ("I get eaten
by a dragon - spoiler alert," she admits) and
the RoboCop remake, in which she played
one of the scientists bringing RoboCop to life
("the moral compass of the film") as well as a
nanny in seasons 6-8 of the serial killer show
Dexter. But her role on Lucifer has raised her
profile considerably as the show has earned
an international fan following, even beating
Fox's Gotham in the ratings.
Her character on Lucifer is a wisecracking
nerd, which suits Garcia just fine. "I bring a lot
of myself to her because I'm pretty silly. I think
sense of humor is really important: I'm more
of a Spider-Man fan than a Batman fan. I grew
up on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, loved Veronica
Mars; obsessed with the tone of Guardians
of the Galaxy, super geeked out when James

Gunn started following me on Twitter. I just
love that space - my dad loved Star Trek
and Star Wars so I grew up watching that.
E.T. is my favorite movie of all time and I just
love a genre that pushes the boundaries and
doesn't really see differences but seems really
accepting. It's totally ahead of its time when
in the '70s you not only had totally different
humans but different species from different
planets working together."
Garcia says Lucifer's third season will answer
some key questions about the character: "Is
he an angel, is he a devil, is he a lover, is he a
friend, is he human, is he celestial? It's such a
fun show - there's no other show where you
can see angels fighting demons, solve a crime
every week but also have the devil playing the
piano and talking in a charming English accent
and laugh - it's a very one-of-a-kind tone."
