AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
RELEASE DATE: April 27
DIRECTOR: The Russo Brothers
STORY: The Avengers assemble to battle

Thanos, who wants to get his mitts on the last of
the Infinity Stones.
SURE PUTS A SMILE ON OUR FACE: Marvel has
been on a roll since the first Iron Man and the
groundbreaking Marvel team-up that was the
first Avengers, which is still one of the most
enjoyable of all the Marvel films to date. But
with Avengers: Age of Ultron not quite matching

the heights of the first film and Black Panther
earning some of the best reviews and box office
of any Marvel outing ever released, the pressure
is on for Infinity War to deliver on plot threads
that have been seeded through everything from
Captain America: Civil War and the Guardians
of the Galaxy movies to Doctor Strange. It all
may rest on the hulking shoulders of ubervillain Thanos and Josh Brolin, who provides
the character's motion capture performance
and voice and will also be featured as Cable in
Deadpool 2. The CG rendering of Thanos, one
of Marvel's signature bad guys, has to do better

than Justice League's soulless Steppenwolf or
Wonder Woman's helmeted Ares, two characters
who dragged down rather than elevated the
movies around them. And Infinity War also
needs to offer up more than our heroes' digital
stunt doubles fighting hordes of CGI monsters,
something both Age of Ultron and Justice League
have already shown us. The good news is that
Marvel hasn't had an all-out movie stumble in
years, with even oddball underdogs like Ant-Man,
Doctor Strange and Thor Ragnarok proving
themselves surprisingly enjoyable efforts. So if
Marvel can't hit a home run with this years-inthe-works epic, something's surely wrong in the
bullpen.
