SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY

OCEAN'S 8

RELEASE DATE: May 25

RELEASE DATE: June 8

DIRECTOR: Ron Howard

DIRECTOR: Gary Ross

STORY: The galaxy discovers the origin

STORY: Danny Ocean's wayward sister,

of Han Solo: rogue, pirate, smuggler,
scoundrel. You'd like him.
FLYING SOLO: Rogue One, despite all
its turmoil, proved to be one of the
most artistically successful of the new
era Star Wars films. Can Solo, under
reliable (Willow excepted) journeyman
helmer Ron Howard, be the same after
previous directors Lord & Miller were
unceremoniously dispatched to the
phantom zone - sorry, we're mixing our
metaphors here - months into filming?
We hope (and expect) so. But, of course,
the biggest mystery is really about
whether Chewie will make it home in
time for Life Day.

played by Sandra Bullock, shows that
thievery runs in the family.
GIRL POWER: Although the conceit of
having Bullock as George Clooney's sister
reeks of a contrived Supergirl gimmick
(remember Helen Slater looking up at
the poster of Superman, her cousin, when
Christopher Reeve isn't even in the movie?
You probably don't), the idea of an allfemale heist is fantastic and should inject
the franchise - which went two movies too
long - with new life by featuring a terrific
ensemble of some of today's most talented
actresses, including Anne Hathaway, Katie
Holmes, Olivia Munn, Cate Blanchett, Mindy
Kaling, Rihanna and James Corden. Wait,
what, James Corden?

Marvel's first epic team-up
remains one of the most
enjoyable, thanks to Joss Whedon's clever
dialogue and some priceless character
interaction between Tony Stark and his
teammates, including new Bruce Banner Mark
Ruffalo and Tom Hiddleston's lovable Loki.

Writer-director Shane Black
takes this sequel off into some
unexpected directions, but this time Tony Stark
seems to hide out and send his remote control
suit out to do most of the fighting.
THOR: THE DARK WORLD
BUENA VISTA HOME
ENTERTAINMENT

Thor goes up against some Dark
Elves in a movie that starts
opening up the Marvel universe to outer other
worlds, laying groundwork for Guardians of the
Galaxy.
CAPTAIN AMERICA:
THE WINTER SOLDIER

The Russo Brothers bring an edgy,
suspenseful vibe to this smash that shows Chris
Evans' Steve Rogers becoming one of the most
surprisingly compelling characters in the MCU.

capes returns.
BIG BIRD: After Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, Brad Bird seemed like
the feature director of the moment, but
Tomorrowland has sent him back to his
roots as an animation director (his dream
project 1906, about the catastrophic San
Francisco earthquake, notwithstanding).
That's all good because people have been
clamoring for a sequel to The Incredibles
- one of the greatest superhero movies
ever made, animated or otherwise - for
years. Catherine Keener and Bob Odenkirk,
presumably playing villains, join the cast.

apparently started on an island
somewhere.
URGE TO PURGE: Ever wonder where all
this purgin' began? Well, you could look
back to the old Star Trek episode "Return
of the Archons" ("Festival! Festival!")
but this prequel will reportedly clue us
in on how the idea of decriminalizing
all illegal acts for one palate-cleansing
day a year began. One thing's for sure:
While Facebook may get too political, it's
refreshing to see a horror movie franchise
be this subversive.

James Gunn brought a terrifically
irreverent heist movie vibe to this
space extravaganza that became so popular
it wound up heavily influencing later Marvel
movies.

The much-anticipated Avengers
sequel features some iconic
moments (particularly involving Paul Bettany's
god-like android Vision) but eventually gets
swamped by armies of fighting CG characters.
