Georgia Magazine - October 2009 - (Page 4)

October 2009 Vol. 65, No. 10 FROM THE EDITOR Every issue we publish what (we hope!) are interesting stories about the great places to visit in Georgia. That’s no easy job—our cup overflows with choices! But this issue, we allowed our readers to cast a vote in our 2009 Readers’ Choice Awards contest for their favorite Georgia historic sites, beaches, barbecue joints and festivals. One reader won a weekend getaway for two in our prize drawing; secondplace winners each won $100. To discover the winning entries, see “Topnotch!” on page 18. In this issue, we also venture out of Georgia to our neighboring state to the north—Tennessee. While it has other things in common with our state—like Lookout Mountain and Tennessee Valley Authority power— Tennessee offers some unique wonders itself. Travel with us to see these “Treasures in Tennessee,” page 24. When you come back home, be sure to try some of the recipes from “Sisters Family Cookbook,” a self-published cookbook produced by seven— yes, seven!—sisters. Their love of cooking turned into a money-making venture that helped finance a kidney transplant for one of the siblings! (See page 36.) Also, we continue our “Special Energy Report” series with “The most significant energy policy debate of our time” (page 16). Since this magazine is made possible by the electric cooperatives of Georgia, electric industry issues are central to our mission. Our intent is to present accurate, factual information and to maintain our focus on enabling our electric cooperatives to continue providing reliable and affordable electricity for all our member-owners. We look forward to hearing from you! Enjoy, DEPARTMENTS 5 VIEWPOINT Improving America every day 6 PICTURE THIS?
