In August of that year, a fire had destroyed the roof of the Elbert Theatre in Elberton. The community raised enough money to repair the building, and the theater was back in operation by the end of November. My earliest memory of the Elbert Theatre was a few years later when the company Daddy worked for (the Elberton Silk Mill) held an employee Christmas party in the theater. I, along with my parents and many of my nine siblings, made our way down to the front of the theater and received toys and candy. When the theater opened in 1940, it was considered the most modern theater in Northeast Georgia with the newest equipment available—including a diffusing screen and updated sound system. The staggered seating allowed a better view of the large screen. It felt like magic when I walked to the water cooler, and water came out automatically. The cooler’s electronic sensor knew a thirsty customer had arrived. Air conditioning, which was uncommon in the 1940s and 1950s, felt good on a hot summer day as I watched Bugs Bunny, the Road Runner, Donald Duck or Popeye the Sailor Man before the main feature flashed on the screen. By the time I was 13, my parents allowed me to walk to the theater across town with a couple of sisters and friends.
