of the month GEMC Bring Georgia home! A taste of heaven BY EMILY ALLEN MAGAZINE I f the Bible gives people food for the soul, then the cookbook “A Taste of Heaven,” produced by the members of New Providence Baptist Church in Norwood, is here to give us some great ideas about food for the body. On Aug. 24, 1835, the Baptist Church of Christ at New Providence near Cadley in Warren County was constituted. The church was admitted to the Georgia Baptist Association and held three of its annual associational meetings in 1860, 1916 and 1949. For the past 170-plus years, the church has been offering locals services and Sunday school classes. In order to build a new fellowship hall and Sunday school classrooms, the ladies of the church produced “A Taste of Heaven” to raise funds for the church expansion. This 261-page cookbook featuring more than 675 recipes was “created by a group of ladies who are known for their good, old-fashioned cooking,” says Trudie Free, a member of the church. Offering down-home favorites, almost half of the book includes desserts, cookies and cakes. Nearly every dessert has two or three variations, so you can choose which one is closest to what your mama used to make or try a new variation on an old favorite. Below is one of the cookbook’s tempting treats that you might think is a taste of heaven in its own right. Chewy Chocolate Chippers 3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 1-1/4 teaspoon Kosher salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened 1 cup dark brown sugar 1/2 cup white sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 2 eggs 2 tablespoons dark corn syrup ® .org agazine eorgiam www.g 40 nts, page native pla ing with Garden 1 tablespoon half-and-half 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips 1-1/2 cups chopped walnuts, toasted Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment paper; set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder; set aside. In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter, sugars and vanilla at medium speed until creamy and light. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in corn syrup and half-andhalf. Reduce mixer speed to low. Add flour mixture, in three separate batches, scraping down the bowl after each addition; mix well. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts. Scoop dough by spoonfuls and roll into a ball with wet hands. (Dough will be very sticky; wetting hands will prevent sticking.) Arrange at least 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets. Flatten each ball slightly with heel of hand or fingers. Bake for 14 minutes or until light golden brown around edges and centers are still a little puffy. Allow cookies to cool at least 5 minutes while on baking sheets before transferring to wire racks to cool completely. Store cookies in airtight container. Copies of “A Taste of Heaven” are available for $15 (shipping included). Please send check or money order to New Providence Baptist Church, 5853 E. Cadley Rd. NE, Norwood, GA 30821.
