Georgia Magazine - April 2010 - (Page 6)

Celebrating the Georgia lifestyle GEMC ® Appreciate the ‘veterans’ articles M A G A Z I N E I have read with great interest the September 2009 issue of GEORGIA Magazine. I appreciate and enjoyed most of all the articles on our World War II veterans. [See “Honoring heroes,” page 18.] I am a personal friend of Carl Beck, mentioned in the article, who trained with the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment at Camp Toccoa during the winter of 1942-43. In 1989-90, I led a fund-raising drive to place a monument at the old Camp Toccoa site where there was little to no evidence of a military camp ever having been there. We erected the handsome black granite monument in late April 1990, and I organized the first-ever Camp Toccoa reunion and dedication of the monument, which took place the weekend of Nov. 18, 1990. We had about 250 veterans show up. Needless to say, I made a lot of friends of the veterans that weekend, most of whom are no longer with us. Beck is one of the few. The Currahee Military Museum in downtown Toccoa has received visitors from all 50 states and 42 foreign countries in the last three or four years. They are coming to see where the story “Band Of Brothers” started. This is the TV miniseries produced by Stephen Spielberg and Tom Hanks and released in 2001. It is now shown on the History Channel very often. I invite you to come to Toccoa and let me give you a tour of the museum and tell my Camp Toccoa story. —Lamar Davis, affiliated with the Stephens County Historical Society, Toccoa How to get in touch Letters to the editor: We welcome your letters!
