What’s new? BabyLand General put Cleveland on the map in 1976 when Cabbage Patch Kids creator Xavier Roberts birthed his first soft sculptures. BabyLand General recently moved to a new home, an elegant white-columned hospital with thousands of Cabbage Patch Kids. (For more on BabyLand General, see page 34.) Treetop exploration has come to North Georgia with several zip-line tours. Visit North Georgia Canopy Tours in Lula, northeast of Gainesville, where more than a mile of cable spans ponds, ravines and pastures. Choose from the two-hour Sky Bridge Tour or the three-hour Adventure Tour for a different point of view of the area’s history, natural attributes and wildlife. Historic Banning Mills in Whitesburg offers one of North America’s longest and highest canopy tours. Recently expanded, it also includes an educational birds-ofprey show. Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, Kennesaw Tellus Science Museum, Cartersville New Echota Historic Site, Calhoun History at a glance Gainesville’s Northeast Georgia History Center at Brenau University recreates a tornado and showcases the history and heritage of Northeast Georgia. It’s filled with permanent exhibits that include The Land of Promise, which tells personal stories of people who have lived in this region, and the Northeast Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. Visit Cherokee Chief White Path’s Cabin to see what life was like for Cherokee Indians, the area’s earliest inhabitants. Steeped in the Civil War’s rich history, North Georgia is known for several significant battlefields. Northwest of Marietta, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park in Kennesaw has a visitor center and a network of trails that spans the mountain. Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park in Fort Oglethorpe, just south of Chattanooga, Tenn., is the nation’s first and largest military July 2010 park. Created in 1890 to preserve and commemorate Civil War battles, it contains monuments, historical tablets, wayside exhibits and trails. Follow the seven-mile auto tour to see major points of interest. Nearby, Oak Hill & the Martha Berry Museum in Rome is the 170acre estate of Berry College founder Martha Berry. The Greek Revival home has a carriage house with vintage automobiles, plus formal gardens and nature trails. Chieftains Museum Major Ridge Home in Rome, built in 1794, is a National Historic Landmark and the former home of Cherokee leader Major Ridge. It’s a designated site on the National Trail of Tears. The New Echota Historic Site in Calhoun commemorates the area’s Cherokee history. Located on the headwaters of the Oostanaula River, the site includes restored and original buildings, such as the Council House, the Court House, Print Shop, missionary Samuel Worcester’s home and an 1805 store. www.georgiamagazine.org East of Rome, Cartersville has several museums including the Booth Western Art Museum with an impressive permanent collection of Western American Art, 100 paintings and sculptures by some of the nation’s finest 20th-century Western artists, plus galleries showcasing the Civil War, Western illustration and Western movie posters. In January 2009, a new museum opened in Cartersville. Tellus Science Museum occupies approximately 120,000 square feet with galleries devoted to minerals, fossils, transportation technology and handson science experiences, including a 120-seat digital planetarium and Stan, a 40-foot tyrannosaurus rex. “With the Booth Museum and Tellus Science Museum here in Cartersville, we’re the smallest town in the U.S. to have multiple Smithsonian Institution affiliates,” says Tara Currier, director of marketing for the Booth Museum. While in Cartersville, also visit Rose Lawn Museum, a restored Victorian mansion once owned by evangelist Samuel Porter Jones.
