For the past 98 years, the church has grown and changed, believing in the idea that grace brings change, and that change is not always about something going away to usher in the new, but sometimes it is about simply adding to and making stronger one’s person and one’s faith. To help support primarily the children’s fund, Geneva Baptist Church members created a cookbook titled “Apron Strings: Recipes Handed Down Through the Generations.” “We collected the best recipes from church members, family and friends and compiled them into a keepsake cookbook, containing 350 well-loved, family-friendly recipes including appetizers, main dishes, desserts and many others,” says Betty Bradshaw, with the church’s fundraising committee. Four generations of churchgoers contributed the recipes, and members of two generations were actively involved in assembling the book. The cookbook’s dividers feature pictures of the children of the church showing their love of the food that brings family together, or just having some fun. “Apron Strings” emphasizes the passing on of recipes and wisdom from one generation to another. Many recipes have little notes attached to them, giving a very personal touch to the whole book and conveying a sense of nostalgia. The warmth and familiarity each recipe expresses will go a long way toward making you feel like a part of the families who compiled the book. More online at www.georgiamagazine.org ® zine.org giamaga w.geor www.g Here is a recipe that comes from this church family to yours: Ron’s Tybee Island Sausage Pie Linda Fay Wilson 1 pound ground sausage 1 tablespoon butter 1/3 cup chopped onion 3/4 cup milk 1 (3-ounce) package cream cheese 3 eggs 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1/2 teaspoon salt (less if sausage is salty) 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 1 (9-inch) deep-dish piecrust, partially baked, cooled Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a heavy skillet over medium heat, crumble the sausage with a fork. Sauté sausage until completely cooked. Drain off fat; remove sausage and set aside. Melt butter in another skillet over medium heat. Sauté onions in butter until tender. Add milk and heat until steam rises; do not boil the milk. Cut cream cheese into small pieces, add it to the onion mixture, and remove the pan from the heat. In large bowl, beat eggs; add cheese, onion mixture, Worcestershire, salt and pepper. Mix thoroughly and pour into piecrust. Top with cooked sausage and bake for 30 minutes or to set.
