It was the first home I ever knew, having been brought there after my birth in 1948, awaiting my father’s return from overseas. When the house sold in the late 1980s, the top of each doorway still sported a thick metal loop from which my baby swing had hung so everyone could keep an eye on me as they moved from room to room. My grandmother, J. Margaret Pullen, whom I called Mama, owned a florist shop situated in the main house. The large flower refrigerator packed with fragrant flowers became a favorite spot for me and my friend Judy Stevenson (now Thompson), who lived next door. No watermelon was ever as cold or as delicious as one from Mama’s flower fridge. Judy and I devoured many pineapple sandwiches loaded with mayo, and ice-cold orange sodas up in our mimosa tree house in Mama’s backyard. It was actually just several boards my uncle had nailed to some branches. We graduated from the mimosa to the playhouse a little too late in life, but we made good use of our cozy hideaway. Rainy days would find us reading Judy’s older sister’s love letters, ignoring the steamy hotbox in which we sat.
