Georgia’s energy outlook Students admire the winning solar car in the inaugural Flint Junior Solar Sprint competition at Thomson Middle School. Racing on sunshine On Earth Day, April 22, at Thomson Middle School in Centerville, teacher Terri McMillan’s honors science class participated in Flint Energies’ first Junior Solar Sprint race. The objective was to design and build a vehicle that could complete a race in the shortest possible time using available solar power. Students were given a basic vehicle kit with an electric motor powered by a photovoltaic panel. Using any other materials, competitors designed and built a solarpowered vehicle that would compete on a racecourse 20 meters long. “Flint Energies is pleased to offer the Junior Solar Sprint experience to this honors science class. Our hope is that these students may one day consider a career in energy research, transportation or automotive engineering, green building design or any type of energy-related technology career. They are our future leaders, and Flint wants to provide an opportunity to inspire these students to create a solution that will provide safe, clean and affordable energy for generations to come,” says Marian Douglas, manager of public relations at Flint Energies in Reynolds. November 2010 Green Power EMC’s Go Green Power curriculum makes learning about renewable resources fun and entertaining for elementary and middle school students. In Go Green, students are taught the differences between renewable and nonrenewable energy sources while studying hydro, solar, wind and biomass power generation. Activities include finding hidden electricity wasters in the home, a hands-on demonstration of solar power, a step-by-step guide to hydroelectric generation and an explanation of how biomass can be turned into energy. The culminating activity is a renewable energy bingo game that reinforces lessons in a fun way. Go Green Power helps students understand the importance of renewable energy as part of a utility’s generation mix and shows how students can conserve energy in their homes. The course is designed to complement Georgia educational standards, which Michelle Godfrey, a third-grade teacher at New Georgia Elementary in Villa Rica, appreciates. “Going green is an important part of our children’s future, and the program is structured to complement our State Environmental Standards,” says Godfrey. “The students really enjoyed the visual learning that the dark/light color experiment showed. The information was right in line to help prepare our students for the CRCT [Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests].” Go Green Power is one of two outreach educational programs from Green Power EMC. The other is Sun Power for Schools, a statewide academic program that provides students with a hands-on example of renewable energy generation. More online at www.georgiamagazine.org FLINT ENERGIES Real-time monitoring of solar energy provides educational opportunities for students at Lovinggood Middle School in Cobb County. A 1-kilowatt photovoltaic solar system installed at a participating school is tied to the electrical grid, which allows real-time monitoring and educational opportunities in the classroom. Green Power EMC was formed in 2001 as the first renewable energy utility in Georgia. It is a partnership among participating EMCs (electric membership corporations) and is the largest renewable energy provider in the state. In 2010, approximately 1.6 million EMC-member households across Georgia had more than 120 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy available to them through Green Power EMC. Green Power EMC continues to grow its energy portfolio with the addition of a 125-kW solar facility in Athens. The facility will bring Green Power EMC’s total renewable generation to almost 25 megawatts. Green Power EMC joined forces with industrial real estate firm Rooker Co. and renewable energy solutions provider First Century Energy to build the solar project. Located on the 12,000square-foot rooftop of a new industrial building, the facility will be one of the largest solar photovoltaic arrays in the state, providing 3.5 million kwh of solar energy to the power grid over its projected 25-year lifetime.
