ALVIN STEWART, ALVIN STEWART PHOTOGRAPHY Cavender conducts a class on “Santa and Media Relations” for Santas and Mrs. Clauses from as far away as Australia at a recent Santa convention. Little Molly Hooker, daughter of Clint and Julie Hooker, of Jasper, gets a personal visit with Santa Tim. 2010 Celebrate Santa Festival in Gatlinburg, Tenn., where they taught two workshops, one on “Santa’s Image, Beyond the Beard and Red Suit” and another, “Santa and Media Relations.” “The main thing I emphasize in these classes is that Santa is for the children and will always be for them,” says Cavender. “Anybody can purchase a red suit and grow a beard, but it’s not a good beard that makes a Santa Claus; it’s the person behind the beard.” To be Santa through-andthrough, “you have to have the voice and the look,” he adds. With a Santa-esque frame well-suited for pulling off the presentation, Cavender dons a traditional Santa suit, the kind made famous in Coca-Cola commercials, and uses a fake beard. He’s been through several suits over the past four decades as Santa; the one he wears now was purchased from a professional Hollywood costumer. He’s been in the Santa business for so long that now when he visits friends, he sees photos of himself with the kids; at a recent wedding, a slide show depicted the groom as a young boy on Santa Tim’s lap. The Santa scenario spills over into the Cavender home, where the basement is dedicated to Christmas with Santa’s workshop/train room 18 housing the first electric train set Tim received as a child, and the Christmas room, complete with trees decorated with antique ornaments and tree toppers from the 1960s. While bringing the wonder of Christmas to children in his hometown is an annual highlight for Santa Tim, the Cavenders look forward this year to returning to the Georgia Governor’s Mansion for a private Christmas party, and to Chattanooga, Tenn., to ride the Tennessee Valley Railroad’s North Pole Limited. “They have a full steam locomotive and serve hot chocolate as someone reads ‘The Polar Express’ story,” says Cavender. “They end Santa Tim visits with Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue and the first lady’s dog, Mercy, during the lighting of the state Christmas tree at the Governor’s Mansion in December 2009. More online at www.georgiamagazine.org up at the ‘North Pole’ where Mrs. Claus and I board the train for the return ride.” Of all their Santa experiences, the one most memorable for the Cavenders was last year when they witnessed a little girl see her Santa wish come true. When Santa Tim asked what she wanted for Christmas, the 4-year-old said her wish was for Santa to bring her daddy home. Unbeknownst to the child, her soldier father, who was deployed in Afghanistan, was scheduled to come home for the holidays; the Cavenders arranged for the homecoming to include a surprise visit from Santa. On the child’s fifth birthday, she was with Santa again when he asked her to repeat the Christmas wish she’d made earlier in the holiday season. “When she did, the doorbell rang and there stood her daddy,” says Cavender. “She ran and jumped in his arms, and, let me tell you, that was my Christmas gift last year. The story went national on CNN and was the story of the day. I will never forget that moment, the feeling I had. It’s a time when I really felt like I was Santa Claus.” The best thing about being Santa, says Cavender, is “listening to children’s wishes and looking at their eyes of wonderment.” St. Nick’s own Christmas wish this year, says Santa Tim, is the same as each year: “Peace on earth and that every child’s Christmas wish comes true.” Jackie Kennedy is a freelance writer living in LaGrange.
