COMPILED BY JENNIFER J. HEWETT Callanwolde bedecked in ’20s holiday splendor Festive cheer, family fun and holiday warmth return this year to one of Atlanta’s most famous historic Gothic-Tudor mansions with Christmas at Callanwolde, set for Dec. 1-12. The event, a 27-year tradition, returns after a seven-year hiatus to transport guests back to Christmastime during the roaring ’20s with designer treasures, lavish floral arrangements and holiday greenery throughout from Atlanta’s premier professional interior and floral designers. During the event, guests can tour the 27,000-square-foot mansion and grounds, see the gingerbread village, shop for unique gifts handcrafted by students from Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, watch an ice-carving battle, enjoy wine tastings and get holiday entertaining tips from expert chefs, and hear holiday favorites performed by choirs, organists and storytellers. Built in 1920 as the home of Charles Howard Candler, eldest son of the Coca-Cola Co. founder Asa Candler, Callanwolde is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it serves as an educational, visual, literary and performing arts center, and proceeds from this year’s event go to further the cen- COURTESY OF CALLANWOLDE Guests can tour the Callanwolde mansion during the Christmas at Callanwolde event, set for Dec. 1-12. ter’s programs. Georgia high school marching bands earned spots among the top 12 bands at the recent Music for All’s Bands of America Super Regional Championship competition, held Oct. 30 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Among them were Kennesaw Mountain High, in Kennesaw (second place and Outstanding Musical Performance); Walton High, in Marietta (sixth); Forsyth Central High, in Cumming (ninth); Hillgrove High, in Powder Springs (11th); and Collins Hill High, in Suwanee (12th). For details, visit www.musicforall.org. • Top eats. Miller Union, in Atlanta, was named as a Best New Restaurant by Esquire magazine in its November 2010 issue. The magazine also touted Chef Joshua Hopkins of Atlanta’s Abattoir restaurant as one of the country’s four “chefs to watch.” Visit www.miller union.com and www.starprovisions.com for more on these restaurants. 8 Liberty notes Free speech, freedom of the press “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press …” —From the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution The First Amendment to the Constitution protects free speech and freedom of the press. Individuals can express their ideas and views without the threat of government censorship. This is not the case in every nation. In some countries, free speech and press freedoms are curtailed when they conflict with the official views of the government or if they challenge the credibility of those who control society. Governments in some nations also screen and censor the works of authors. More online at www.georgiamagazine.org As with any freedom, free speech and freedom of the press may not be misused to inflict harm on someone else. For instance, laws against slander and libel exist to protect innocent parties from lies and defamation. These freedoms of speech and of the press are still secured by our Bill of Rights and by those sworn to uphold these rights. At this time of the year, these freedoms are certainly among those “blessings of liberty” for which we can all be thankful. — Jim Jess For more about freedom of speech and freedom of the press, see page 9A of the December 2010 digital edition online at www.georgiamagazine.org. web exclusive GEORGIA MAGAZINE http://www.christmasatcallanwolde.org http://www.christmasatcallanwolde.org http://www.musicforall.org http://www.millerunion.com http://www.millerunion.com http://www.starprovisions.com http://www.georgiamagazine.org http://www.georgiamagazine.org
