After an almost two-year closure and $20 million expansion, the Georgia Museum of Art, in Athens, reopens with a weeklong celebration, set for Jan. 29-Feb. 5. Located on the campus of the University of Georgia, the museum’s addition includes 16,000 square feet in new galleries, an outdoor sculpture garden, expanded lobby and additional storage space. A study center, partially funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, will also allow curators, students and researchers better access to the museum’s archives. Visitors to the new gallery space will also get a glimpse of works in the museum’s permanent collection that have not been on display in recent years. The grand reopening kicks off with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony and ticketed gala event, followed by a preview day for member patrons. The public unveiling begins Jan. 31, followed by other activities including a guest lecture by sculptor Beverly Pepper, whose work will be featured during the celebration, a musical performance by Modern Skirts, family day, refreshments, kids’ activities and more.
