In addition to James Brown, the region has connections with other entertainers, including contemporary opera singer Jessye Norman, who hails from Augusta, and comic actor Oliver Hardy, who is commemorated at the Laurel & Hardy Museum in Harlem and at an annual festival on the first Saturday in October. Numerous lakes and rivers, including Lake Oconee and Clarks Hill Lake, dot the area and provide a variety of outdoor adventures and recreation. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Clarks Hill Lake is also known as Thurmond Lake on the South Carolina side.
