patch, we stopped at the electric fence that kept the cows out. We slid under it carefully. Then we began sliding the biggest melons we could find into our sacks. But three 30-pound melons were too heavy to tote. As we tried to heave the sacks on our backs, the bottoms gave way, and the melons plummeted out making a loud thud that alerted Mr. Simpson’s dogs. Soon, the back porch light came on. We figured the next sound we’d hear would be the blast of a shotgun, so we each grabbed one melon and took off running. In the excitement, we completely forgot about the electric fence and ran directly into it. Our clothes dampened by the dew probably added to the shocking experience as we wriggled and yelled in pain! Finally, we broke free, except for Charlie. We tried to help, but every time we grabbed him, we’d get shocked. My mind raced with our dilemma. If we stayed much longer, we’d be caught or, worse, shot! If we yelled for Mr. Simpson to shut the power off, we’d be discovered, and I knew what would happen at home! Suddenly, Charlie broke free and we escaped with only two watermelons, and one of them was cracked. The next day we gathered to lick our wounds. We all agreed it was an event we wouldn’t soon forget or repeat, and although watermelons are delicious, they just aren’t worth the pain! Roy L. Brown, of Royston, is a 32year law enforcement veteran and a member of Hart EMC. If you have a meaningful Georgia experience to share, see page 6 for submission information.
