It’s My View A collection of readers’ favorite ‘Viewpoint’ columns from GEORGIA Magazi ne Thanks from the EMCs I sat down and read the entire July issue of GEORGIA Magazine. President/CEO, Georgia Electric Membership Corp. By Paul Wood Celebrating the Georgia lifestyle GEMC ® Established 1945 P.O. Georgia’s electric membership corporations (EMCs) have established a long tradition of providing their local communities with much more than wires, poles and electricity. As consumer-owned cooperatives, EMCs serve as community catalysts, 24/7, providing opportunities that span fundraising, education, economic development, employee volunteerism and a host of other activities. Local electric cooperative members are making a difference for hard-hit people who await help from nonprofit charities bearing the brunt of lingering tough times. While an ongoing economic slump stifles conventional charitable giving, an innovative cooperative fundraising program helps fill a crying need with pennies, nickels and dimes. Community Assistance Resources and Emergency Services (CARES) for Pickens County Inc. is one of dozens of charities across the Peach State that benefits from an unconventional kind of giving, namely their cooperatives’ Operation Round Up® fundraising programs. Thanks to Jasper-based Amicalola EMC’s Operation Round Up, CARES has received $34,500 it otherwise wouldn’t have had to help fulfill its mission of providing food and financial assistance to crisis-stricken families and individuals. “CARES sees the Operation Round Up program as a special blessing,” says Larry Starr, executive director of CARES. “Amicalola EMC, GEORGIA MAGAZINE How to get in touch Letters to the editor: Please include your name, address and phone number.
