They love being near Atlanta, watching old movies at the Fabulous Fox, visiting Stone Mountain during Christmastime and, in the spring, driving to Callaway Gardens. If you sat near them at a restaurant or in the mall, now retired and with grandkids, you’d never guess the story they have to tell. My parents, Chris and Connie Rosenau, met at a stoplight. It was 1971. Mom was a college girl; Dad was a young Navy seaman. After three months of writing, then four weeks of dating, my dad proposed. They married in a tiny chapel and started out very poor. Eleven days after they married, Dad got his orders to go to Vietnam. When he returned 11 months later, he met his baby daughter for the first time—my big sister Michele. As I grew up, Dad never talked much about the Vietnam War. I knew that was partly because of how he and the others were treated when they returned home. During Vietnam, Dad was on the USS Mauna Kea (AE-22), an ammunition ship that Larry R. Matthews, a fellow seaman, called “a floating bomb.” On this ship in the oceans near Vietnam, my dad and the other seamen would work all night supplying 500-pound bombs, six to a pallet, to other ships, using steel cables stretched between the ships. It was not easy to shift the bombs or steer the ships, which had to stay on the same course at the same speed, with 100 feet or so between them unGEORGIA MAGAZINE http://www.roofover.com http://www.roofover.com http://www.georgiamagazine.org
