Even while immersing myself in one of the most glorious autumn seasons, the prospect of this month is exciting. Holiday decorations come out, families gather, good food beckons, music abounds and surprises await. Though the surprises this year may not be as glamorous as in past years, we will make do, enjoying the gifts of the season itself. The weather may be crisp, but you can enjoy the multitude of drive-through, holiday light displays across the state for very little outlay—in your warm car. Callaway Gardens and Lake Lanier Islands have fantastic displays every year. Many of these holiday light shows offer more interaction like roasting marshmallows, watching a laser light show or ice-skating. One of the newest is at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, where you can wander 30 acres of gardens and see the millionplus lights and natural displays. See “Magical nights, holiday lights,” page 16, for details on these and others, and don’t miss the online pages listing more light displays across the state. Once you’re back home, curl up with a good book—it’s a great way to spend a winter day! But keep it close to home by reading books by Georgia authors. We have a plethora of prolific authors out there. Read “Between the covers,” page 19, to discover more new authors and others’ newest titles. (Again, more books are online!) Finally, think about what your best Christmas present was. See what our CEO Paul Wood recalls in his “Viewpoint” column this month, and don’t miss the “Snapshot” kids with their “Favorite Christmas toys”—with another page online!
