MAy 2012 Compiled by AmAndA Robinson E Celebrate springtime at the Mountain Laurel Festival ach year, thousands gather in Pitts Park and Clarkesville’s square for the Mountain Laurel Festival, a staple of springtime in the Northeast Georgia mountains since the 1960s. Considered one of the “Top 20 Events of the Southeast” by the Southeast Tourism Society, the festival holds the title as the oldest of its kind in North Georgia. This year’s 50th anniversary festival will be held May 19. Fine-arts and crafts vendors, an antique auto show, zip-lining, carnival rides and live bands will fill the streets and park. The parade will take over Washington Street, and the grounds of the Historic Mauldin House will portray scenes from Appalachian life. Festivities will conclude with the presentation of Mountain Laurel beauty queens, parade grand marshals past and present and an explosive fireworks show.
