The festival offers arts-and-crafts vendors and music. This is your chance also to visit the Seahorse Key Lighthouse, which hosts its open house for the festival. If you’re a Halloween fan, start with the Sarasota Pumpkin Festival on Oct. 26-28 in Sarasota (www.sara sotapumpkinfestival.com). For more chilling thrills, the seventh annual Freakshow Horror Film Festival takes place in Orlando at the Hilton Orlando Hotel the same weekend (www.freakshowﬁlmfest.com). More music, food and dance than most folks can handle in two days deﬁnes the Florida Cajun-Zydeco Festival, Nov. 9-11 in Hollywood. Orlando Clearwater Sarasota Hollywood Orlando, Fla., hosts the Freakshow Horror Film Festival to get everyone ready for Halloween. Tennessee The Louisiana traditions in food and music are celebrated at the Florida Cajun-Zydeco Festival in Hollywood, Fla. October 2012 Head north to celebrate fall colors and enjoy the mountains of Tennessee as the trees begin their annual seasonal foliage displays. The Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga always hosts special events, and they continue into the fall with “Thrills, Gills & Chills,” exploring some of the scarier creatures of the deep with special programs. Come in costume for the month’s concluding event on the evening of Oct. 30, Aqua-Scarium (tnaqua.org). The Tennessee Aquarium River Gorge Explorer conducts fall color cruises hosted by an aquarium naturalist who identiﬁes wildlife and historic points of interest along the route. Known as “Tennessee’s Grand Canyon,” the cruises follow a section of the river that is among the most beautiful in the country. Celebrating the state’s heritage, the 27th annual Mountain Makins Festival in Morristown, Oct. 2728, features juried crafters displaying their works for sale, including pottery, folk art, ﬁne art, woodworking, jewelry and other handcrafted items. Gatlinburg celebrates the season beginning in mid-September with the Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival through the end of October. The 37th annual Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair runs from Oct. 11-28, drawing numerous artisans demonstrating their skills and selling their products. It’s a great way to become familiar with the multi-generational craft traditions of the Southern Appalachians, not to mention loading up on holiday gifts (www.gatlinburg.com).
