Madison has retained much of its pre-Civil War charm. A fun way to see downtown is by horse-drawn surrey with North Georgia Tours. Owner Melissa Piche takes visitors to homes with paranormal stories starting with the chamber of commerce office, once a firehouse. According to Piche, “A former worker frequently heard footsteps of a ghostly fireman from the uninhabited upstairs when she worked there alone.” Other houses with a paranormal story include Luhurst, home of Lulu Hurst, known as The Georgia Wonder because of her apparent ability to move large items using just the pressure of her hands. In her youth, she performed around the U.S. She retired after two years and married her manager, Paul Atkinson, then-owner of the “Battle of Atlanta Cyclorama” painting. North Georgia Tours, Madison North Georgia Tours also offers a Haunted Watkinsville Tour. Piche starts where Watkinsville began around 1801 at Eagle Tavern. She says, “When the East Georgia Paranormal Society came several times about five or six years ago, one spirit they discovered was a Confederate soldier. We do know a soldier was hidden from Maj. Gen. George Stoneman’s raiders here.” Piche tells of an encounter by a former docent, Anita, at the tavern with a spirit called Henry. There are many other spirits in the old tavern. 28 While investigating in the Tavern’s basement the psychic investigation team heard a sound like the plastic casing of the camera being crushed, and the investigator holding the camera felt a pain in his hand. He told the rest of the team, “It’s time to leave.” He had suffered injuries to his hand. When the paranormal team investigated the tavern’s history, they learned that at one time, the property was used to store bodies during the winter while the ground was too hard to bury them. If you start your Athens tour at the visitors’ center in the Classic Center, originally an old firehouse, you might spot its alleged ghost, firefighter Hiram Peeler. The Cobb House, home of Gen. Thomas R.R. Cobb, credited with writing most of the Confederate Constitution, has a few spirits of its own. According to Sam Thomas, curator of the house museum, one mysterious spirit of an older black woman peers out the upstairs windows. Chandeliers move, and doors open and close for no reason. One armoire that belonged to Cobb has doors that sometimes open of their own accord. Strangely enough, when a staff member tries to open the same doors on a tour, they will not open. Athens’ University of Georgia campus has a favorite ghost. Students tell of seeing a man in Confederate uniform around Demosthenian Hall. According to Michele Griffin, chairperson of Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation, which hosts well-researched haunted tours, he is Sen. and Confederate Gen. Robert Toombs, who attended the university until his expulsion in January 1828. “He returned in August on commencement day and spoke under a big oak. Legend has it he was giving such a powerful speech, all the students in the Chapel came out to hear him.” Dicy Ann Roberts’ grave, Athens KAThleeN wAlls In addition to colleges, cemeteries and theaters also have ghosts. Athens is no exception. Old Athens Cemetery, founded in 1810, is the final resting place of Dicy Ann Roberts, who died about age 13 and was buried there in July 1852. People have seen an apparition of a girl her age roaming the cemetery. A group investigated and found many unexplained phenomena. One investigator, a UGA librarian, reported seeing many orbs. The Morton Theatre, built in 1910 by Monroe Bowers “Pink” Morton, a wealthy black entrepreneur, also claims strange manifestations. The theater was the hub of AfricanAmerican culture in its time. Barbara Andrews, executive director, even has a photo of one of the theater’s spirits. Perhaps the numerous hostile encounters between Union soldiers and residents during the Civil War can explain why the Antebellum Trail is laced with ghost stories. Then again, some things may be better left unexplained. Perhaps the many spirits of the Antebellum Trail just want to encourage visitors to enjoy this special part of Georgia. Kathleen Walls lives in Middleburg, Fla., and is the author of several travel books and novels.
