This plant’s leathery, dark-green leaves with a slight gloss can stand on their own in the landscape, but they also provide the added bonus of producing large, colorful blooms in the fall and early winter when few other plants are able to light up the landscape. Their flowers range in color from white to a vibrant red. To maximize the number of blooms on your camellias, plant them in a garden spot that receives partial shade—an area of the garden where the sun is filtered, usually by leaves and foliage, and peeks through for most of the day. Be sure to water regularly as the camellia is establishing its root system; once it’s fully rooted it can tolerate less water. One popular variety is the “Yuletide” camellia, which comes in bright red or a soft pink and blooms right before Christmas. Its flowers have bright yellow stamens, which make the flowers “pop” even more against the winter landscape. Use these camellias as a colorful hedge, screen or as a spotlight in the garden.
