Compiled by ViCtoria SCharf deCaStro Progress on EMC cabin Electric membership cooperative (EMC) representatives volunteering at the state FFA/EMC Wiring Contest in January were given a sneak peek by the state camp director Todd Teasley of the EMC cabin renovation at the FFA/FCCLA Center in Covington. The EMC cabin, which was built in 1957 through funds provided by Georgia’s electric cooperatives, has been made sound again and should be ready for campers this summer. The 41 EMCs throughout the state, along with Tucker-based Oglethorpe Power Corp., Georgia Transmission Corp. and Georgia Systems Operations Corp. have committed more than $140,000 to the much-needed renovation. The project includes structural repairs, new windows, doors, bathrooms, flooring and drywall, rewiring the building, replacing the roof, new furniture and bunk beds. Teasley notes the design will incorporate a new wheelchair-accessible entry and bathroom—one of the only cabins at the camp with these features—and says this project has been the impetus to plan on refitting many of the facility’s cabins with the same type of features. “The EMC cabin renovation project is a perfect example of the EMCs’ longstanding belief in the value of the Georgia FFA/FCCLA program,” says Georgia EMC President/CEO Paul Wood. “We look forward to this renovated little granite cabin continuing to host generations of campers learning to better themselves and our communities through FFA for years to come.” 14 Farm Bureau convention highlights More than 1,700 farmers and state agribusiness leaders attended the Georgia Farm Bureau 75th Annual Convention held on Jekyll Island Dec. 2-4.
