Gardens plant of the month Bonus t n conte Simply gorgeous COURTESY PIKE NURSERIES E chinacea, commonly called coneﬂower, is a hardy, sun-loving perennial that is stunning in the summer landscape. While there are several species of the Echinacea plant, including white, orange and yellow blooming varieties, the most commonly known is the purple coneﬂower. It has petals that slightly droop back below an orange, coneshaped seed head. The Echinacea plant stands about 3 to 4 feet tall with blooms that protrude 4 to 6 inches above the plant’s foliage. Once established, it is a very low-care perennial that thrives in the afternoon sun and tends to like semi-dry soil. Plant lower-growing, sun annuals, like Vinca Cora or petunias, in front of Echinacea for a stunning garden combination. Don’t let the beauty of Echinacea stay in the garden, however.
