Many people told us they came to the gardens because of that article! -Barbara Schneider, marketing director, Gibbs Gardens, Ball Ground Man and machine Your Viewpoint in the September 2013 issue really struck home [see "Now that was a car!" page 5; bit. ly/vpt913]. Although I never owned a GTO, my best friend did-a high school graduation present in 1963. We all fell in love with that car. There never has been, nor will there be, anything close to that package of pure muscle and beauty. If ever there was a sexy car, that was it, and fast as greased lighting. Another reason your letter struck home is because I feel a strange bond can be formed between man and machine. A few years ago, I decided a bigger tractor with a larger mower would save me lots of time and toil trying to cut 44 acres of pasture. This logic came despite the fact that I really enjoyed the 50-hp Massey Ferguson I already had, fully paid for and complete with a strong front-end loader. I pampered that tractor, servicing it on time, every time. When the dealer drove up to deliver the new machine, I had a sick feeling and knew I had made a serious mistake. I will never forget watching him drive off with my loyal companion. My Massey seemed to cry out to me as they went out of sight. As long as I live, I will regret that stupid move and feel like I betrayed my loyal companion. Man and machine? Who knows. -Ron Popiel, via email Governor's classmate MAGS MAGAZINE ASSOCIATION OF THE SOUTHEAST 6 I always enjoy the photos and reading GEORGIA Magazine. I especially enjoyed the September 2013 issue featuring Gov. and Mrs. Nathan More online at www.georgiamagazine.org Deal [see bit.ly/gamag913]. I went to school and graduated with Nathan, and I met Sandra after they were married. A year or so ago, he invited his classmates to the Governor's Mansion, and we had a great evening. I believe that we, his classmates, are like family to him because he does not have siblings. He's one of the finest men I know, and after rising to fame, he never forgot his hometown friends and old-fashioned values. -Doris (Williford) Smith, Sandersville A park's gratitude The board and staff of Piedmont Park Conservancy were delighted to learn that Piedmont Park was voted a Top Pick in the "Best place for a family picnic" by the readers of GEORGIA Magazine. [See "Georgia winners!" October 2013, page 16; bit. ly/readerschoice13.] A major part of the Conservancy's mission is to provide "a recreational resource that enriches the quality of life for all Atlantans," and this award certainly suggests we are succeeding and having an impact beyond the city's borders. The Conservancy's donors and supporters will be pleased to hear the news. Piedmont Park Conservancy considers it an honor that thousands of people choose Piedmont Park to host their family reunions, birthday parties, company picnics and social gatherings. It is gratifying to know our efforts have been rewarded, and we appreciate your informing us that Piedmont Park is considered one of the "best of the best in Georgia." -Yvette Bowden, president/CEO, Piedmont Park Conservancy, Atlanta Correction: The title of October's "Liberty notes" column was incorrect. The correct title should have been "National debts and the Supremacy Clause." Share your thoughts about our stories, and we may publish them. Email us at magazine@georgiaemc.com.
