ost people are familiar with the
important role that plants play
in our lives by taking in carbon
dioxide from the air and producing
oxygen. However, there is more to
air quality than just carbon dioxide
and oxygen levels. Plants also play
an important role in helping us with
air pollution too.
Indoor air quality can be worse
than people expect. Secondhand
smoke, mold, dust mites and volatile
organic compounds (like benzene
and formaldehyde from paints and
plastics) can all negatively impact
our health. Research by NASA has
revealed that certain common houseplants can efﬁciently remove pollutants like formaldehyde, benzene and
ammonia from the air in a room.
To create a cleaner, greener and
healthier home, start the new year
with a new houseplant! These indoor
plants bring in much-needed color
during the winter, remove contaminants and improve the overall health
of your environment.

Here are some favorite, easyto-grow houseplants that ranked in
the top of NASA's list of Air Cleaning
Champions:
* Aloe - This easy-to-grow, sun-loving succulent helps clear formaldehyde and benzene, which can be a
byproduct of chemical-based cleaners, paints and more. Aloe is a smart
choice for a sunny kitchen window.
* Peace lily - The peace lily (Spathiphyllum) has been the most common houseplant for years. It's an
easy plant to care for and produces
beautiful, white blooms regularly
throughout the year. Peace lilies like
to have consistent moisture and can
be placed in areas of the home with
lower light. This houseplant also
topped NASA's list for ﬁltering out
all three of the most common volatile organic compounds (VOCs)-
formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene.
* Mother-in-law's tongue, or snake
plant - Sansevieria trifasciata is a
great choice for those who want
